Would like to get a chronograph. Want it primarily for rifles with muzzle brakes, but would also be nice to use it for handguns and even archery. I would like to be able to use it without it being attached to the rifle barrel and changing barrel harmonics.

Is there any option out there besides the lab radar? The magnetospeed is nice, but it ruins the shot accuracy when attached to the barrel.

Any good deals on them currently?

Thanks!

I have a magentospeed and an optical chrono. Each serves their purpose. Magnetospeed is more accurate and I can use it in poor lighting conditions/rain/snow and don't have to stand in front of the firing line and adjust placement if I'm moving from a 100 yard target to a 200 yard target. I don't feel it ruins accuracy. Changes the POI slightly but group sizes don't seem different at 100 or 200 yards for me. Cons are not being able to use it with handguns or arrows and it's not convenient for cycling through a bunch of firearms if you're wanting to get numbers for the whole arsenal you brought to the range.

If I want to get speeds for a bunch of guns I'll set up the optical chrono. If lighting isn't perfect I'd expect to lose about 10-20% of readings. But I have set it up in my backyard and run arrows and pellet guns over it. It was also considerably less expensive than the magentospeed package.

Sadly it seems amazon has pretty good prices on optical chronographs and magnetospeeds, like about $5-10 over the cost I'm seeing at our distributors. Lab Radar sounds nice but is a bit pricey for my own purposes and the few people I've seen using it at the range seem to be divided on whether it's worth the money.

I've used a magnetospeed and a caldwell g2. I like the caldwell g2 much more than the magnetospeed (but I only used the cheap one).

The caldwell g2 has worked for me in most weather conditions and everything but the worst wind here in Wyoming.

I ditched the magnetospeed for a Labradar this year. My Magnetospeed was really hit or miss on getting readings. I switch between calibers a lot and burning ammo for load development and additional ammo for velocity just started pissing me off. I had almost a 4" POI shift with the magnetospeed on my long range rifle.

The Labradar is a really neat unit. (this is the part of Rokslide that costs you money, get the good stuff)

Just curious why you hate the magnetospeed

I can’t use it for any kind of group shooting on my skinny barrels, I get up to 4”-5” groups when I do try. Also get quite a few error/missed readings, and always having to re set it because it slides on my barrels.

It was just more of a headache then some others. Being able to measure velocity while shooting for accuracy at the same time would be nice.

So if I want to take one gun and shoot 3 or 4 different factory ammos, a handful of rounds each, to know average speeds, is the magnetospeed ok for that? Not looking to develop loads, just want to be able to verify hold-overs etc?

I use the adapter so it mounts to my rail and not the barrel.
No issues.
But LabRadar is good as well.
