Hey guys, sort of new to working up my own rifle. I’ve done a chassis build 8.6 blk on a stock 700 action with a remage barrel but that’s it so far. I am starting on a 338 RCM and went with a Kelby nanook action. The nanook is only offered with a BDL inlet. What are opinions on bottom metal. I’m not opposed to having a hinged plate mag but wanted to see what everyone’s thoughts were on BDL inlet compatible box magazine bottom metals… which one is the best? I’m focused on reliable feeding. Looking at Wyatt’s. Also, Will BDL stocks need any fitting? Also, how well would the RCM fit with an AICS single stack short action magazine?

Is there no gunsmith involved in this build? They’d be able to steer you pretty well on available options. I wasn’t aware the Nanook wasn’t M5 compatible? That’s doesn’t seem right to me. Also don’t know what the hell a 338 RCM is lol

No gunsmith involved. Having preferred barrels install the barrel on the action before they ship it. Just want to have everything picked out and here when the barreled action arrives. And unless I’m misunderstanding it’s not m5 compatible.

I'm definitely not completely in tune with the terminology and compatibility, but I believe that the just the cutout in the action. You should still be able to use an M5 bottom metal of some sort, with the appropriate mags/hinged floor plate that work with the action.

Surely there are many people that have nanooks that could chime in. A quick search shows plenty of builds on nanooks with M5 bottom metal of various configurations.

I cant help you with bottom metal fitment but I love the 338rcm as a round. I have one of the ruger compacts with the 20" barrel and its been a great rifle. 185ttsx at 2900 and 200gr fusions at 2850 pack a mean punch. I've had luck with blc2 as a powder. It's a bit tricky to find brass but you can resize 6.5 prc I believe.

I guess my timing was good then cause I found some hornady brass pretty easily. I found a lot of guys saying RL-17 was the best powder and that stuff is impossible to find. So glad to hear some other powders work well for it.
