I just purchased a Browning X-Bolt Max Long Range first brand new riffle ever and its the "long range style" LOL so looking to put a nice scope on it. I currently have a Vortex PST, Swaro Z3 and they are good but looking to do something little better for big gun and glass quality. Initial thought to go with Leupold but I am a bow guy and have limited experience with many brands and models. I want a turret, likely 50 MM Objective and 30MM tube. Also what rings? I have traditionally used Talley but this is big caliber so not sure if I should go some other route.

This is 1:8 twist so I will be shooting some 200+ grain bullets through it. Thoughts?

I'd try berger 215 hybrid factory ammo, if you can find some.. for rings i like my hawkins rings, but im not sure if they have any for brownings. You should be fine with talley rings. I like my nightforce scopes, I've heard good things about zeiss V4 and V6 series scopes. It all depending on what you want to spend.

I am not familiar with the Berger Hybrid but will look into it. Sounds like good starting point. I want to stay around $1k ish...

Thanks for the info. May look into the NF Rings.

This is my first year with a zeiss v4 and I absolutely love it so far. Great glass, solid zero stop, lots of adjustment range, etc. I put talley rings on mine, it's a tikka 300wsm.

I run my x bolt long range .300 with a Zeiss 4-16x44 V4. You’ll be right in that $1000 range new less used. I shoot 215gr Berger hybrid bullets for fun shooting out to a mile and 199gr Hammer Hunters for killing stuff out to 600 yards.

Factory Berger 215 ammo fits in the mag and loads well?

I have a hells canyon topped with a Nightforce SHV on Vortex precision rings. Shoots factory 215 Berger's very very well. Hornady's shot like absolute trash. The Bergers will not fit in the factory mag if I recall. A little sand paper and some elbow grease they fit, and cycle great in the mag. Takes 5-10 mins.

Ordered Berger Hybrid Hunter in 220 & 245. I have never shot a bullet that big but with a 1:8 and hopes of 2700 and that 245 BC is insane.

I have a 300 WSM AR 10 for smaller 300 grain rounds.

I’m thinking I’m going Leupold VX5 HD
I was gonna go VX3 LRP but I like locking CDS you have the turret move ones and I’m paranoid for live.

I think night force is just more than I want to spend. And I am trying to keep the gonna lighter than heavier.

Thanks for all the input!! Gets pricey set these monsters up!

For a lightweight quality hunting scope you'd be hard pressed to beat a vx5 or vx6. My brother just purchased a zeiss v4 and I was very impressed with it as well. Probably still go leupold though on my next rifle.

So I was going with a VX-5HD 4x20x56 and the guy that loads for me and is way more knowledgeable about guns says he recommends stay with 44mm and under just stays closer to the riffle and if gun tips over the scope isn't outside the gun he likes his 44mm better than his 50's. I don't have any preference but if its like binos the bigger objective the more light.

If not going VH5HD 3x15x44 gun will just be for hunting and I am trying to decide so I can order. I was looking to go with B&C reticle. Thoughts on this with larger objective like 50 or 52 verses 40 or 44?

formidilosus has discussed scopes a few times, search on his handle
I just searched first 3 pages under his stuff and nothing specific about what I am asking and I am not gonna spend an hour sifting through honestly. If you don't want to reply that is fine or anyone else but those who want to its appreciated.

I never post anyway either so here is my big chance! LOL

Lots of great scope options available.

On my T3X in 300 Win Mag, I run the VX6HD (3-18x50). I personally would disregard what your guy said and get the 50mm over the 44; it is a hunting rifle and you want to ensure that you can see the animals at first and last light. My VX6HD has been excellent and have had no issues; lots of range time at various distances and lots of travel.

The NX8 is a great scope. I like it more now that it comes in SFP. The Leopold Mark 5HD is also a great scope; can shop around and get some great pricing (~$1500). The Huskemaw Tactical is bulletproof as well; glass is better than the Blue Diamond. The VX5HDs are good; no issues so far with the two that I have.

As far as ammo, figure out exactly what you are wanting to achieve. What kind of animals are you planning to hunt and at what distances are you wanting to kill them? The either find commercial ammo that meets those requirements (hopefully your rifle will like at least one of them) or let your guy know so that he can develop the appropriate load for you.

Old school thinking. Most guns now built for LR will have a raised comb to the stock. That’s because most high mag scopes have 50mm+ objectives. Knowing that, stock makers came up with a fix to the problem you mentioned.

Now put a big 50mm + scope on an older rifle with a straight comb stock, and he’s right.
