Will do. I am going to bird hunt with the dogs Thursday morning and then shooting in the afternoon. Chrono is for delivery today so I will know by dark Thursday. I loaded 24 shells. There are three lighter loads with H1000 and three loads with the 7828 each with fours shells.

in my opinion, your approach to reloading has been good. I would stick with your original thought process and ignore speed. the round you have chosen is more than capable of taking a brown bear, and you have learned a lesson from the first hunt so you should feel confident and focus on accuracy and repetition.
when it comes to magnums and hunting you would be hard pressed to find a situation where that tiny gain in power means anything down range. what I see more often is people who load hot but don't react well to the increase in recoil when in the field. a .45 group on the bench can be 2 moa in the field and the opposite can hold true, find a load that is consistent regardless of group size (within reason) and spend your time learning that gun and load.

on the issue of chronos, the one you got is fine. keep in mind they are sensitive to light and distance from muzzle so there may be errors based on that. always verify and never just trust one thing.​

Well here is the update:

I really like the Chrono.

Here is what I did for my 338 RUM. I went with two powders 7828 ssc and H-1000. I shot four shot groups. I have put 150 rounds through this new rife working loads up and these two powders have proven to be the best over and over again.

Here is what the manuals say for max load as to each with a Barnes 265gr LRX.

Barnes - 7828ssc 85gr max 2,780 fps 24” barrel
H-1000 no data, but for 250 gr they have a max of
92 gr compressed

Nosler - 265 gr. Spitzer
7828 ssc 86.5 max 2845 fps 24” barrel
H-1000 90gr max 2817

Hodgdon - 275 gr bullet
7828 ssc max 86gr 2731 fps 24” barrel
H-1000 max 91gr compressed 2729

My first load was 86.5 gr of 7828ssc. You will recall I thought the bolt was stiff when I shot 86.8 gr. I had to see if what I thought was right. I was the bolt was definitely stiff at 86.5. Not really stiff, but a sure sign of pressure issue. Speed 2897 fps. I only shot one shot and moved on.

Next was 86 gr of 7828 ssc. Again the bolt did not feel right, but I felt comfortable shooting more shots. Speed was 2877, 2868 and 2886. The group blew up in additions to the bolt issue. I didn’t measure, but I would say 1 inch.

Next was 85.5 gr of 7828ssc. There was no issue with the bolt. Temperatures today were 55-60 while I shot. Speeds were 2855,2847 and 2857. I did not get a reading on one shot. I shot a 3 shot group of .526 give or take hundredths.
The fourth shot was a flier for some reason. Felt good, just went out maybe 1/4 inch beyond the 3 shot group.

Then I moved the the H-1000.

First group was 90gr. Speeds were 2887,2884,2885 and 2912 (???). The four shot group was just under .500.

Next was 89.5 gr. Speeds were 2871,2852,2866 and 2870. This group blew up vertically. Again I did not measure but it was over an inch. Maybe 1.25 inches.

Next was 89 gr. Speeds were 2828,2932,2837,2835. Same type of deal. The group blew up vertically again. This group was about an inch to 1.25 inches again.

My gun has a 26 inch barrel and it looks like I am going to go with the H-1000 at 90 grains. I have shot that load at least 4 times and it always produces a tight consistent group. I also have never seen any signs of pressure issues, even though it is a compressed load.

So now you know all I known. Thanks for all the help and comments. Never too old to learn from those with more experience.

Based on your gun having a 26" bbl, you are where you should be for max velocity while not exceeding a max book load. Chronograph is a great tool, good on you for adding and verifying a key piece of data.
