Need some help with parallax

I bought a burris 3-15ph today. set the diopter on a flat sky first but didn't really feel like it was perfect. Went about sighting it in. didn't get a great group at about 2.0" at 100. (rug american gen 2 300wm)

So I dialed the parallax till the image was as sharp as possible. Reticle and target both looked good but eye movement definitely made the aim point shift. I expected the parallax to just naturally be off the number on the dial, but I figured it would be minimal. When I checked the dial it was about 60% of the way to the 200 yard setting. I backed it down to the 100 setting and the image did get a fair bit less sharp but the parallax was significantly improved and the group did tighten up significantly.

I was taught make the image sharp as possible when setting parallax. Could what I'm seeing just be a result of the diopter not being perfect?

Rifle shot great out to 400 where I quit.

Set parallax for no movement (that's what it's for). Then fine tune diopter for focus. This is especially key on FFP scopes.

You should be able to work it to get parallax and focus to come together at the same point.

Doesnt using the diopter like that (focusing the target) cause the reticle to go out? or is it different on a ffp scope where they both move together?

Not necessarily in the scenario presented. There’s usually a lot of leeway in the reticle/diopter adjustment. I’ve seen lots people way out on the diopter when they think they’ve done it right when helping with this issue.

Copy that. I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Just to confirm. The parallax shouldn't be THAT far off on the yardage right? I mean i didnt expect out to be perfect but 160 setting for 100 is a bit much?

I’ve often found notable differences in the yardages marked on the scope vs reality. Adjust to real world and that’s what you want.

If it bothers you, use a paint pen to mark the scope so you can reference the actual adjustments in the future
