Here in CA, the seller is legally responsible for the product until the purchaser receives it, in expected condition. The seller is also legally responsible for insuring the item. This even applies to products purchased out of state and shipped to CA. However, many sellers still try to get the purchaser to pay to insure the product. You might want to check both your and the sellers state laws/regulations to see how they might apply.

I hate to say it, you might be screwed having used PP. the only good that might come of it is the seller having his account locked (yours might be as well)

It is unfortunate you ended up dealing with one of the very, very, very few on this forum that wouldn’t make it right.

A copy of his/her DL and hopefully phone number will be in the package, I would pick up the phone and give him/her a call.

I would be very unhappy. I would have already posted his full name and handle as he has already told you "tough cookies its your fault." There is no excuse for poor packaging like that.

Things appear to be working out, without involving PayPal.
I’m not going to share his name on here if he does what he says. If you’re genuinely concerned about who he is, PM me and I’ll share.

as a person who has shipped a ton of stuff id say that is poor packing. i use a whole roll of clear tape minimum on something like that. looks like the barrel wasnt bubble or foam packed either. you should always give an odd one sided heavy item the shake test. an item should never slide inside a box. if the gun is ok in general id say money off at minimum. id duracoat most guns anyway but it shouldnt arrive like that. since they are the shipper they must insure it. not you. been down that road a few times. keep a cool head and try to work something out. good luck!

What is the preferred method for exchanging money for internet firearms sales?

Last time I bought anything on gun broker, credit cards and cashiers/ certified checks were the norm.

Have people started using Venmo or Apple Pay in the classifieds here as payment options?

If you have any extra money in your PayPal account I’d pull it out now. Your account will more than likely be suspended while they investigate it, locking all funds. I was suspended for a week or two for selling brass casings on gunbroker and using PayPal.
