Buy flashers for your gongs. We have 12" gongs out and its really hard to see the 18 and 22 reacting without the flashers. The 1800 flash can be seen with your naked eye.

The flashers help a ton and some of the new ones actually work properly.

We were seeing flashes from impacts with little .224 bullets at the 1,000 yard gong.

100yd zero is a must I feel. If you can’t get there just input an offset in your solver. But you’re going to want a zero that is not affected by environmentals

You still zero at 100, but with a vertical offset , bear in mind this is a dedicated scope for long range, he can swap in and out with the usual scope at will.

Yep, flashers or a drone are important, I have been using much smaller guns lately, slamming the mile with my 243 but the drop is wild, and I pretty much am there with the 223 when it is calm but elevation is brutal

1,000-2,000 yard shooting. I would wager that the further east one goes in the US, the higher the degree of difficulty when it comes to finding those length of ranges to shoot. Not so many “ wide open spaces “ on the East Coast!

My 6XC has best the crap out of our gongs too. I am having good luck with the 106's that people love to hate. I killed about 40 rockchucks with them yesterday and HOLY CRAP is the xc more violent at 300yds than the 20 practical.

I shot my Sako .308 on Friday using 168 ELDM hand loads at 1 mile.

36” plate (roughly 2 MOA) and was able to make impacts, including ending the session with 3 impacts in a row.

The cartridge choice isn’t nearly as important as other factors (as I’m sure you know).

What elevation are you shooting at and what MV are you getting?

A mate of mine shoots a 20 inch Howa 308 and does very well at the mile with 200 grain Bergers, 1200 ASL

These things are pretty tough, it still works.

Since this thread is being bumped; I feel obligated to provide an update. I used my Ruger American 7 PRC with the A tips and reloader 25 powder and had good results, including impacts at 2000 yards (visible with flashers on the plates. I used a Vortex Strike Eagle and the Burris XTR Signature rings setup for 30 MOA of cant.

Here’s a photo and a phoneskope photo of the range, the big plates at the back are the 2000yard targets.

It was gusty/windy the day we were shooting 1000-2000; which made things hard for everybody. Most of the guys there were shooting expensive custom LR rigs in 300 Norma. They were pretty impressed that my little Ruger could hit at about the same frequency as their setups past around 1500. The wind made it such a guessing game it took some of the fun out of things and made it hard to analyze accuracy/precision. That said, I really enjoyed the time, and got surprisingly confident hitting the IPSC targets out to around 1400.

Before we shot 1000-2000yards we did some 100-1000 yard shooting, including a “know your limits challenge”, shooting progressively smaller targets from 8” to 2” at 500 yards (only one shot per target, and your score goes to zero if you miss). I shot my new Tikka Game Ace in 6.5CM on that day and won the challenge, as I was the only one to hit the 2” target. It was cool, and the other shooters there were very helpful and encouraging. Here’s that target setup through the phoneskope.

Since this time, I had to change powders for my 7PRC to N560 since R25 was unobtainable, and am getting 2950fps with good accuracy with that. I was prepared to shoot out to 600 yards cold bore on my elk hunt with the Ruger and a new Vortex LHT scope I mounted. Ironically, I got a ~50 yard shot through a small window on this bull, my best to date. (Private Land NM)
