Need help identifying areas to hunt in Southern California

Is the only way to know what's private and public is to use the app ONXY or to know someone? I find it hard to believe there aren't any free web resources with public and private land info.

This is my third year going for deer and I really want to to branch out on my own and start scouting heavier.
I'm trying to figure out where to go, and where I can actually go.

Any help would be great!

Also I'm in the Los Angeles area if any of you guys are local.

Nobody is going to share any prime locations...if they do they are likely sending you to animal Siberia. But the maps that ID the private and public lands are GOLD! You can find game in the narrow fingers of public land surrounded by PP. Just use the tracking feature on your GPS so you can prove you never strayed onto PP.

Lol. Trust me I know. Hunters don't share that stuff. I've been fortunate to meet one friend online who helped me tremendously last year. But I know spot sharing people are few and far between.

I really just want to find a way to know where private and public land is.

I have the basics. And know what's needed to get the job done. I just want to start looking for new spots closer to home that I can stay at longer. And scout more often

There isn't some website that uses google maps and then runs a filter over it (To identify areas)?

I don't own a GPS. I have just been using my phone so far.

I have a spot(s) for D11 but that's the second half of the season. I want to find a spot for A zone close to Los Angeles. Last year we drove up north about 4-5 hours. But with my schedule. I can't do that all time.

So I'm determined to find a good spot close to home. Or within 2 hours driving time.

If you truly wanna be successful then you MUST use a GPS and this map: HUNT California Public/Private Land Ownership Topo Maps for Garmin GPS | onXmaps
It will allow you to ID and travel on some of the best public land there is here.

For the southern half of the A zone, especially within 2 hours of the LA area, there's a ton of private/public land interface. $30 on a product like onXmaps is basically a requirement for that area I'd say. Even once you're on forest service land there are a lot of private inholdings you have to be aware of. I've used Trimble for years but they're phasing it out so I'm making the switch to onX myself.

Thanks! So I guess onX or purchased map for a handheld is the typical resource.

Don't people using OnX on their phones have problems in remote areas?

No, onX and Trimble and just about any GPS app for your phone have a feature to cache data for use when you have no service, usually referred to as offline maps or something to that effect.

Do most of you guys have a preference of phone app or hand held GPS? I love the idea of having the ability to send texts from delorme out reach. But I read the maps suck. And it has to be paired with a phone. Etc.
but I'm wondering if there is any real advantage to getting a dedicated GPS handheld over just using my iPhone with OnX?
