Need an new Elk Gun!

It’s hard to go wrong with a Tikka T3X in .308. Tons of ammo options, can find it anywhere, and it has plenty of power for elk especially if it’s inside of 200 yards.

Look at a stainless version as it’s a little more weather resistant.

EVERYONE wants a suppressor...it's just not gonna happen. Money and other things involved. People can preach it all day, but for some, its not happening. I need two guns.

It's a pickle for sure but I have some time so I'm in research mode.

can afford to "need" two guns but cant afford a suppressor? Can you afford a scope to mount and bullets to shoot it?

Whats the pickle?

...and I have a stockpile of the Nosler Custom Ammo that it's set up for, plus several boxes of other premium 300 RUM factory ammunition.

Had the same dilemma a few years ago. I went 300wm. I debated 300PRC, but during covid it was impossible to find ammo. Availability was a major factor in my decision. Although it is threaded, I don't run a suppressor or brake and find the recoil quite tolerable. Seekins PH2, rifle bare is 7.2, and with everything but the bipod, just a hair over 9.6 lbs. It's a tack driver and will do 1/2 moa if I do my job.havak.jpg

Maybe you missed the point I'd like to have a backup gun as well...cause nothing like driving 20 hours, spending $1k+ on a tag, and having gun issues, miles back off grid and not having a spare...hey, but at least I'd have a can on a bunk gun, right????

No, I can't afford a scope. Was looking at iron sights or possible taping a match stick to the barrel. I reload with brass from gun ranges, whittle down rocks for bullets and concoct my own powder from used fireworks. 🤪. Maybe I'll fabricate my own can from a 2liter coke bottle.

Is it just me, or is he kinda snarky for a guy asking the same question twice, years apart, who doesn’t know the difference between cartridge and caliber?

Sounds like you could have just punched your question into ChatGPT and prompt it to not give you suggestions you don't want and get the answer you may have already decided on and just want some validation. But instead you posted on an internet forum with a culture that is counterintuitive to the request you made and expected everyone to abide by your rules. I don't have a suggestion, basically if you look into it enough, basically any centerfire rifle that meets the legal requirements where you are going to hunt is lethal with the right bullet and range choice, so throw a dart at the board and move on.

Just you. The thread is about a new gun.

He asks for caliber first and then follows it up with listing a specific rifle, which ALL rifles are cartridge dependent. Unless you have a .257 Roberts that can also send .25-06 rounds downrange as well. Not difficult to follow along with what's going on.

You're taking this crap way too seriously, but you keep doing you 👍

I guess I could have.

I could also go a truck forum, ask what V8 crew cab, gasoline motor everyone suggests in 2 wheel drive. But get bombarded with how I should only buy a 4x4 diesel with duellys and say I’m an idiot for not listening…when all I wanted was peoples SUGGESTIONS the truck listed.

I suggest you got to a pawn shop, buy a marlin 336 in 30-30 for $400 (for backup out of state). Take the rest of the money and buy an AB A-10 suppressor ($480).

Buy a rifle in the same caliber you have so your primary and backup guns shoot the same ammo. Narrow down your needs to the main couple that you want. Such as design and operation of safety mechanism, does it lock the bolt? Three position? Tang? How about loading? flush magazine, hinged floorplate, doesnt matter? Do you want blued action and a wood stock? Stainless? Cerakote? Synthetic? Sling swivel studs or QD cups? Deciding which details like these narrows down your choice. Thats why I bought a X bolt in 308 even though I already had a Savage in 308.
