7mm caliber. Very versatile, great bullet selections. Proven elk killer in my experience.

600 yards max range, but that’s also cartridge specific.

We can talk specific cartridge and bullets, too, but you didn’t ask.

I LOVE tikka t3’s but I’ve also heard it’s not fun to shoot in the 300 win mag.

In all seriousness, I’m not looking to break the bank here as I’ll Probably only get a half dozen ek hunts in…bamn lottos! Lol

I have a really nice scope already, so looking to drop “around” a grand on the rifle.

Looking for the obvious:
Light weight
Accurate to 500-600 yards
Threaded barrel as I WANT a muzzle brake

In your opinion, what’s a good 300 min mag that I could put or comes with a muzzle brake?

For myself, I’d get a .223, because I’ve read enough to be curious, and I’ve already decided that my next gun would be something I can use to teach the kids to shoot.

6.5 Creedmoor, similar to my 308, manageable recoil, kills elk cleanly.

Buy a Tikka T3x Stainless 270 and be done. It'll kill anything you need it to. Ammo everywehre, cheap to shoot, mild recoil. LOTS of factory ammo options as well. If you want to upgrade anything on it, Tikka has a ton of aftermarket options for everything.

300wsm, 18" barrel, Scythe on the end. Recoils like a 260 with 180 ABs at 2850.

Springfield armory model 2020 waypoint. Chambered in 30-06, with zeis conquest V4 / 4-12x44. With NO turrets.

I agree with staying away from tge silencer bull crap.

Everyone shows up with to much technology and all the gimmicky crap and can't hit nothing.

30-06 is still and always will be best deer/elk cartridge

I keep trying to convince myself that I need to 'upgrade' from my Browning AB3 30-06. But I can't come up with any real good reasons. Aside from the fact that it's ugly, a little loud and kicks like a mule. But it's under 7lbs and an absolute tack driver. So far, it's proven itself to be a very reliable firearm in the field.

Obviously, a simple question is too hard for some. And some people have waaaay too much time to be searching someone old posts. . lol Others don’t live on this forum 24/7 and have better things to do.

I guess I can explain that I tried shooting a buddies 300wm and did not like it. I guess you didn’t pick up on that, but I’m sure you are too busy digging I t everyone profile posts.

It was a very simple question. Simply put, if buying your first elk gun, and you had a solid 308 you shoot for whitetail, what would you buy? I’m not looking for: “308 is just fine.” “Just buy a suppressor”. I know a 308 is a great gun I also know a suppressor would be the cats meow. But don’t want suppressor. I know a horse would be awesome as well, but I’m not buying a horse.

I want a new and dedicated elk gun…just not a 300winmag. I’m not swapping out scopes to hunt whitetail and elk every season or weeks apart by owning one gun. I also wouldn’t mind the 308 being a backup gun

It really was a simple question but theres always the “I know everything” guys on forums…I’ve found a few.

And I have time, it’s no rush.

If you didn’t like shooting the 300 Win Mag, you most likely won’t like shooting the 7 PRC. It’s a little step down, but still has stout recoil (without brake or suppressor).

7-08 is a fantastic cartridge as well.

Easy button for me would be a 7 Rem Mag. Ammo is everywhere, its a great round to pick up where the .308 leaves off and big enough to responsibly hunt any animal in North America, with substantially less recoil than the .300 Win. In a 7 pound gun it's very manageable, even for those who aren't used to being around big magnums.
