Need an new Elk Gun!

How was the 7prc to shoot without the suppressor? I know the Bergara is slightly heavier, but would the 7 fair well on a lighter gun?

I have the squared crest and it's not super light. It comes with a muzzle break OOB and then I put the supressor on it. Recoil is surprisingly light. Even my skinny son would shoot it all day. It's less than the Tikka light 270wsm.

If considering a Tikka in 7prc you should watch this video. Recoil does not look good in that lighter gun.

I'm kinda in the same boat... I already own a Rem 700 in 300WM, and I'm looking for something lighter (in weight) and with less recoil. Any one interested in my 300WM?

This fits into not knowing what you’d be getting into. If you already shot a light weight 308 and wanted to upgrade a notch, that would make sense, but going lighter and a heavier recoiling round is a big jump and odds go way up you won’t like it. I’d still suggest a light weight 308 or 7mm08.

If 300WM in a light gun is too much recoil for you....I do highly suggest one with a brake AND a suppressor, it made my elk trip quite pleasant this year...best to look at something in 7mm. You can still get more range than a 308 with less recoil.

Did I suggest a brake AND a suppressor?

Tikka 7 mag with non sniper scope will come in around 7.6 with no mods. You can tinker if wanted and make it for the cool kids, or leave it stock, stack racks and abuse it💯🤙

Maybe I missed it but do you have the gun picked out you want, just not the cartridge? The reason I ask is because stock design will play into how the recoil will feel. I have a browning x-bolt in 28 Nosler and it’s not that bad to shoot. I don’t remember specs but I’m pretty sure bare rifle is around the 7lb mark.

Based on your parameters (which are BS btw…I’d tell her Im getting the threaded barrel) but alas with me if only owning a 308 I’m getting a 6.5 prc or a 280 ai.

It’s the closest recoiling to your .308 but a little flatter shooting. Will serve as a backup whitetail and elk gun.

.277 on caliber.

.270 Win on cartridge.

500 yds max range for factory ammo offerings, depending on bullet.

Edit: we have taken elk from 40 yds to just under a smidge over 500. You hit them in the lungs with complete penetration (aka hitting both lungs), they have no other option than to take a trip to your freezer at the end of the day.

Bro...Reading is tough, I get it. I understand there are a ton of calibers that kill elk...that wasn't the question, bro.

Question was, bro, What caliber would YOU buy if you were to buy an elk rifle under 7lbs and your only other gun was a 308. Pretty simple.

It has been asked already, but… Are you wanting cartridge recommendations or just calibers? And are you aware those words are not interchangeable?

For my pick, buy a Tikka in 243. If you aren’t comfortable with that, same rifle in 6.5 creed. And if you live in a free state, buy a suppressor before you do anything else.

Tikka 6.5 prc or 270wsm or browning 6.8 western or 6.5 prc would be my top choices if you wanted a little more than the 308 for distance. But a 6.5 creed,6.5x55 Swede,7mm/08,270 or 280 would all fit the bill.

The one I DID buy and use on elk and intend to continue to kill everything with is a 6 CALIBER. With a suppressor. Incredibly fun rifle

Springfield armory model 2020 waypoint. Chambered in 30-06, with zeis conquest V4 / 4-12x44. With NO turrets.

I agree with staying away from tge silencer bull crap.

Everyone shows up with to much technology and all the gimmicky crap and can't hit nothing.

30-06 is still and always will be best deer/elk cartridge

Im not buying a gun like the one you asked about. Its going to be threaded.

I’m really curious why you don’t want a threaded barrel? Also, folks are trying to help. Be respectful back.

6cm, 6.5cm, and as others have said buy a suppressor. Or just keep the 308 and buy a suppressor and put a better scope on it if it’s not good enough. Suppressor first
