Howdy, headed to idaho 36b for a diy backcountry hunt. Was hoping someone could give me an idea of the weather during the middle of october. Going to camp around 6000 to 7000 feet. Thanks for the input.
Having hunted near 36b, plan for everything. I've experienced lows around 15 and highs around 70 all on the same trip. Rain and snow as well. Check the forecast before you are out of cell service.
I have hunted around there any many times and have experienced T-shirt weather to Below Zero that time of year. As the Above posts have said, prepare for everything.
I wold take a pair of frogg toggs or precipts or some light rain gear . I also take a puffy jacket and puffy pants for sitting along with boot blankets, stocking cap and warm gloves. I know it sounds like a lot, but they are light and compress well and really help with sitting in the cold and glassing. I also take A piece of closed cell foam for sitting on.
A good layering system will go a long way for you. And don't bring the lightest tent you can find, bring something that can withstand the weather if it comes.
Thanks everyone for the advice. We will just have to check the weather as often as possible the closer we get. And keep extra stuff in the truck just in case.
I just got back from that unit in October, it was 50 degrees and partly cloudy the first day. Then it snowed and was bitter cold the next 4 days. Expect colder temps than whatever the forecast shows, I needed every bit of gear that I brought. I slept in a 4 season Stone Glacier Tent, a zero degree bag, with a liner, and my insulating layers… and, I was still pretty cold. A piece of closed cell foam pad for sitting on the snow, and my water proof insulated mitts were a life saver. Plan on having water filtration or sterilization that won’t fail or freeze in the cold. I had to start fires in order to defrost my water to drink in the mornings and evenings. Good luck if you are headed out or are already out there?
Couple years back I backpacked into the frank first week of October. Short sleeve weather. Beautiful. 5 days later, I hiked out in a blizzard, with 6-8" of accumulated snow in about 3 hours and temps dropping toward the single digits.
