Need a quality 6+ man tent

I need a new truck camp tent. Don't want canvas, want low maintenance. Not interested in floorless. Want to be able to stand up in it. Want solid 3 season, or light 4 season construction. Full coverage fly, 2 doors and a sizeable vestibule. Want it to last and hold up to any thunderstorms. My initial thought was the Cabelas AK Guide tents but those have been discontinued, as has the Bighorn II, both of which would have worked great. Any other good options out there?

I like the Big Agnes tents. I have a backpacking one and a big car camping one. They are built well and should hit the requirements.

You say 6+ man tents......do you intend to put 6+ in the tent? When you mention the AK Guide tents I'm assuming no, my old 6 man AK guide tent was more of a 2-man tent. Not sure what "maintenance" you're thinking a canvas tent has.

The Bighorn II would not meet your criteria. I have the Big Horn III and it's fantastic. But, neither the II or III has a full coverage fly, two doors, or light 4 season construction. And it does have a vestibule. But, obviously that is sold separately.

Cabelas Alaskan guides are great and are on eBay fairly regularly, but the 8 man are the hardest to find if that is what you want. I have the 6 man it is the best tent I’ve ever owned for truck camping applications.

No way. Just two men. Canvas needs cleaning and waterproofing. Harder to clean too.

Based on your criteria, (6man, stand up, vestibule, etc.) a wall tent is probably what you are looking for. I had a Cabela's 20' long Alaknak for several years and it performed well in all types of weather in WY. I have since sold it and have a Davis Canvas Wall Tent now. There are advantages and disadvantages when comparing cotton canvas to nylon / synthetic. I have read reviews of the recent / new Alaknak tents being of lesser quality compared to the older ones. If you could find the largest size Alaknak tent (27ish' long I think), you could get 6 hunters and all their gear in there and probably be comfortable and not on top of each other.

I believe cabelas still carries an “instinct” series 6p AK guide tent. it’s got aluminum tent poles, a wider vestibule, and more vertical walls.

I assume you’re in South Dakota?

Canvas needs cleaning and waterproofing. Harder to clean too.

My current canvas wall tent I've had since 2008 and have used it every year for hunting and family camping since then (over 300 days use). I have never cleaned it (I let the rain do that), nor done any waterproofing. It did come with the mildew/water treatment already done from Davis Tent. No leaks, and looks pretty darn good for 13 years usage. Pic was from last year.

I have a 10x14 Kodiak Canvas Flexbow style tent and love it for two guys. Plenty of space. Heated with a Big Buddy Heater well into North Dakota December hunts. Also have the vestibule which creates even more protected outdoor space for cooking.

I have not. Can't say I have been through torrential rain, but have seen no issue with the couple light rain events. Wind is no issue with the Kodiak. Very sturdy. Has also done well in the snow, as well.

Reviving an old thread here…has anyone tried the Wawona 6 man from northface? I need a big tent for a horse pack trip and I’m trying to keep the tent sub 25lbs and be able to (basically) stand in? Wish I could bring my flexbow, but it’s just way too heavy.

I'd look into an SO option, either buy, rent, or get creative - buy used and sell after the trip for pretty much what you paid for it. If you rent, I'm pretty sure they rent stoves too.

Waterproofing? I've never had to waterproof my Davis tent, and it breathes much better than any sil-nylon or poly tent ever will. You put ANY tent up wet and you're asking for trouble. Nothing is maintenance free.
