And I didn’t know a man that would accept a gift from a poor man until I met you !

Yes it’s a great grab - but you said it took 15 mins - most people would have done it for free and only just requested a smile and thank you in return.

His grandkids or kids (possibly or maybe he has no family) will be looking for that little rifle that brought many memories and they’ll never be able to find it because you now have.

I’m not one to provide harsh criticism in an open forum - but just know that it’s my opinion that is stated here. Maybe you didn’t realize that this is a way to interpret the “gift” you received - but realize - old timers sometimes don’t realize what they are giving away in gratitude.

Someday you and I will be the old timers - and I hope that the future generations - not even born yet - will not take advantage of us - and will only request a thank you, grin, & handshake.

Maybe try no criticism until you’ve read and understood what has been posted? The guy said he asked for a 6 pack. The old man insisted on giving more. Sometimes you insult the giver if you refuse the gift, especially an old timer that’s offering up a rifle he’s probably had for decades. I imagine op will think about that old timer every time he looks at that rifle, he may appreciate it far more than the grandkids ever would. Context is everything…

I read a few times.

I said “my opinion”

For 15 mins of work for old timer - again - I personally would have done for free - and would have expected nothing in return - and would have never taken rifle.

Maybe it’s the Marine Corps values in me. Or maybe it was how I was raised - and stories I’ve heard of old timers giving away items

I just felled a big dead Jeffrey pine at my place and it scared the hell out of me. Fell exactly opposite of where I thought it would. Pro quote was $2000 and I should have paid it! This sounds like a good trade on both ends of the transaction and both parties are happy. Dik commentary otherwise!

Haha! Did you see the trees? Are you a proficient timber faller? Can you put a hundred plus foot tree between two buildings ten foot apart?
He was an old logger, something you would never know anything about, had no kids or grandkids. A tree service would have quoted him to the tune of 2000-2500. He now has firewood for next year. It was his damn rifle to do with how he damn well pleased. Yeah, it only took me 15 minutes. That’s experience, Partner. Most people wouldn’t be able to do it.
Why even respond to the trolls. They don't know what they are talking about.

That's a nice gun and a very nice gesture from the old timer.

Now for the fun part - go shoot something with it and bring the old guy some processed meat and a hunting story.

I'm not a tree cutter by trade but dad taught me about 40 years ago how to fell a tree, direct a tree, etc. Has been a useful skill to have, especially when the tree guys quoted $10,000 to remove this tree.

Insisting on no payment at all can be insulting , especially to those of us with “outdated” values and who actually work for what we own. The inference can be “you can’t afford me, you need my charity”. He needs no charity, just the respect he deserves . A six-pack is often the coin of the realm. He offered more. Fair trade. No one owes anyone anything. Good neighbors both.

Cool gun 👍

I coulda fell that tree in 15 minutes too. Only difference is I probably would have smashed his house which would have cost much more than a Rem. 600 to fix haha

Sounds like the old man was appreciative of your skill set and your wilingness to help him out. Good on you.

I think the idea of bringing him some meat that the rifle killed is a terrific idea.

The guy who rebarreled my rifle a few years ago is a customer of mine. He treated me quite well, and the rifle seems to shoot almost everything well. After I killed a bull with it a couple years ago I took him a 6" chunk of backstrap.

I've worked for some generous people, and occasionally they have wanted to give things. I try to tell them one time that they don't have to, and if they still want to give it to me I try to just accept it graciously. Like has been mentioned, it can be a little insulting if you protest too much. I often try to pay it back in some form down the road, but outgiving generous people can be a challenge sometimes.

Rut ought to be going pretty soon in your neck of the woods! Go fill some tags with that rifle and your friend’s freezer! Cool rifle and cool story you have to go with it and to pass along when the time comes for you to hand it down.

Good hunting!

Likewise. Getting in a “favor doing contest” can be a lot of fun too!

Ive given stuff to someone that impressed me who could use it. If I dont really use it any more but its got memories or something associated with it, I cant think of a better way to clean out my stuff than giving it to someone who will keep it in action, especially someone with some shared values. 👍

Cool gun, and great that you have a story to go with it. Im sure at some point you’ll get a chance to pass it to its next caretaker.

You did well Logger Dan. No one should criticize what you received. It’s between you and your customer.
