Nassau Bahamas fishing?

So I've managed to wind up with a trip to the Bahamas from Dec 1- Jan 6... Working, but just a regular 40 hour week. So plenty of time to do other stuff.

I'll pack an 8wt, but was also planning on booking a guide for bonefish at least once while I'm down there.

Any experience with guides out of Nassau that you loved or hated?

I went last year, same timeframe but didn’t end up fishing. Family trip. I looked moderately into it but I believe you cannot fish as a non-resident without a Bahamian with you. Not sure if that is absolutely accurate or if it is if it gets enforced.

Their regulations make reading western units seem like Dr Suess...

It's also different fishing the flats.

Flats fishing might be worth looking into it. I wouldn’t pay a dollar to go offshore there. There are some panga trips if you just have to get on the water, but don’t expect much.

Yeah, definitely flats.

I've been offshore a bunch, just low on the list at the moment.

If you can get to Andros (Western Air, less than $100, 30 minute flight from Nassau) do that. The flats fishing is far superior to anything you'll find near Nassau. Danny at Andros Bonefishing Club. It's two steps better than a fish camp, it's not a resort but the fishing is fantastic. You can leave Nassau at 7 and be fishing by 9.

Where are you staying? Atlantas? If so you can book through the resort, their guides are pretty good. You’re there during the best time of year for bonefish, unfortunately most of the permit and tarpon fishing has cooled off by then. Bad weather pops up more often during the time you‘re there. You want calm weather for flats fishing.

Is your 8wt a saltwater rig? I don’t use my freshwater setups in salt. It’s just too hard on the equipment. I suppose one trip wouldn’t hurt it to much. Guides will have good setups.

Not at a resort. Not really sure. Lol

Long story, but I'm going to help out some friends, they're handling all that and most of my food, in lieu of writing me checks. Easier to keep it legal for taxes and foreign worker.

Bonefish is what I care the most about, conveniently.

Yeah, part of why I wanted a guide was good salt gear. I may pick up a dedicated saltwater 8 before I go, but the current one sees no use outside salt, so if it dies on this trip, I won't care. Taken it to the coast a few times. Picked it up cheap for what it is, rinse it real well every time I go out.

Post your question in The Hull Truth website. You’ll get good info there.

If you’re in Bahamas you’re near good bonefishing. Plan you trip around the weather.

As someone who’s worked in the Bahamas the work visas are crazy. Rules and the cost are mind boggling.

Also never hand a Bahamian money and expect change. If you owe $15 and hand them a $20. They’ll say they have no change. You’re out $5. Grifting is an art over there.

But it is beautiful and fun. Love it there.

Awesome. I'll check it out!

I already booked flights, but it's almost 6 weeks, gotta be some good weather in it!

And thanks for that warning!
