Trying to get some loads put together this week for my 6 PRC as I’m down to the wire for load dev before a hunt. A building project has taken a ton of my time, so now I have limited time to get a load put together. Ran out of N565 loading for another rifle, and my Bass Pro doesn’t currently have any in stock. Neither do they have any H1000. I have 4831SC, StaBall HD, and Grand on hand, and was wanting to try N565 some more (I played with it a little), but can’t get any more in time. My Bass Pro does have N560, N165, and N568 on hand. Is N568 gonna be too slow?

Maybe @huntnful has some experience with this

I have found that N568 is very slow or just not the energy of N570. In my 338 Norma Mag it took 91.5 gr N568 to get to the same velocity as 86.5 gr H1000 and 88gr of Retumbo. I have a 6 PRC improved and have had good luck with Retumbo. I would try Staball HD before trying the N568, I think N588 would work but I think you won't get peak performance and I'd use a super long drop tube and vibrating tooth brush to see how much you could get in there.

Have you played with N560 in the 6 PRC?

I read some posts about Grand but I believe I got there by looking at 7prc info. They were getting good speeds from it. You might try a simple ladder in 1 gr increments and see if a flat spot emerges.

Yeah, I was hoping Grand would work for me. Not saying it won’t, as the barrel isn’t “broken in” yet. I don’t do official break-in procedures, just getting rounds down the barrel before hard load dev. Here’s what I got last time I took it out with the 112 Match Burner. Only 33 rounds down the barrel. Also picked up some 108 ELD-M to try.

If you're in a pinch and needing to get it dialed, I'd sacrifice the velocity and go with the 4831sc. Every single load I've tried with Staball HD has looked like that. I've given up on it completely. Good luck man!

I haven't used it. My 6 PRC has a bit less body taper and 40 degree shoulder so it hold ~2.5-3 gr more then a normal 6 prc. it a bit on the fast side for my application and not quite as temp stable.

No, but I’m prepping for my MT hunt. My cousin, who’s my hunting partner, lives just outside of Great Falls.
Okay. I was thinking maybe you were in Montana since our rifle opens Sat. and you said you were in a pinch. I was just thinking if you were somewhat local, I would just have given you enough N565 to get you a handful of rounds loaded. Good luck on your hunt here.

I appreciate the thoughtfulness!

@Mark B,
You mentioned Retumbo. How does that compare to N565/570? I know where I can get hands on some

I'd expect charge weights between the two for similar pressure. Compared to h1000, 1-1.5ish grains more retumbo in 300 WM - 300 Norma used to get me similar pressure signs and H1000 is typically pretty close to 565 in most applications.

Velocity wise, what’s the comparison for same pressures?

Close, Retumbo can outperform h1000 in some cases though. It was never as predictable as h1000 in the 300 mags for me so I still have a mostly unused 8#er from a long time ago.

Retumbo is about right between N565 and N570 in burn rate. I would say in the 6 prc about 1.5 - 2 grains less of retumbo will yield similar velocity and pressure as N570. Id probably start with retumbo about where you left off with N565 just to be safe and then work up from there. I'd think it would take a least 1 more grain then N565 to yield same velocity. Be safe, start low.
