Mystery ranch

I had a Metcalf on a guidelight frame. Great jack of all trades pack. Only thing that bugged me slightly was the lack of pockets which sent me to the beartooth.

The guidelight MT frame is an improvement. More of a refinement than a wholesale change. Biggest difference I notice is in the belt. Fits better. More padding and stays tight once adjusted.

awesome. Thanks a bunch. whats the longest you ran the metcalf in the field for? A bunch of buddies are looking to do a 5 day hike in and I’m wondering if she will be enough.

7 nights. Gets a little snug with winter gear. I am a XXL size so all clothes, sleeping bags, etc. are husky. Did 5 nights in the Grand Canyon with plenty of spare room. Lot less gear for warm weather.

You can add 10L or so to the 70L capacity buy stuff the snow collar. You can over load it with the meat shelf as much as you like but it carries less well with a bunch of bulky gear on the shelf.

For 1-2 I will use a smaller pack. For 2-5 nights I think the Metcalf 70-80L size is about perfect. Unless you are going to make a habit of 5+ day treks, then jump up to the marshal.

Spot on. I love my Metcalf bag and have used it for day hunts and I have also loaded it up big time. Very versatile. I also have a Pintler bag now so I use that bag for day hunts or overnights. Desk Jockey is spot on about going up a size if you think 5-7 day hunts will be the norm but the Metcalf will do the job if you need it to.

Metcalf can do a 5 day very easily. If you pack a lot of gear or extra clothes it will get tight after that. Very happy with mine going in to it’s 3rd season.
