I have been looking at a new hunting pack, would like to get an Exo but it is out of my price range. Been doing some digging and came across the Mystery Ranch Terraframe 80, new model has load shelf on the guide lite frame. Anybody use this for hunting or in general? It runs $50 less than the Metcalf 75.

I’ve run the Terraframe 65 on my last 3 elk hunts, and numerous backpacking trips. Been absolutely thrilled with it. Has carried loads at/ approaching 100 pounds with no problem. The frame has a lot of structure to it compared to others which I like and it fits me extremely well. You can also buy the bag only from mystery ranch so could buy something like a beartooth further down the road and use the same frame. Last thing I’d say is customer service is top notch. I put a tear in my bag through using it as a shooting rest a few weeks before season opened, called them up and they expedited the repair at no extra cost to make sure I had it for my hunt. Hope that doesn’t change now that Yeti bought them out.

I’ve used a Terraframe 50 a lot. Elk, deer, bears have all taken a ride in it. It’s a great pack for the $200 new I paid from REI. Basically the pintler. I got a little lumbar extension pad for it that made it 10 times better. I can’t remember who makes it, but it was a smaller operation.

Edit to add, I found it

I can only comment on the bag design and not the frame, since the bag is essentially the same used back when Mystery Ranch was Dana Design. My only head scratcher was always what to use those two big verticals pockets for. Being on the absolute farthest from your center of balance, anything with weight works against you so bulky fleece usually gets stuffed in there on the trip in and out, but while hunting those pockets work best empty or they have a weird way of flopping around.

Definitely not a deal killer, I still have three packs of that design, but I’ve often thought that pocket design works better for backpacking and a flat back with carrying flap cinches down better for day hunting, especially with the largest bag sizes.

I like the vertical pockets for easy access to rain gear or puffy jackets. Also a good pocket for a wet tent you don’t want to put in the same pocket as the rest of your gear. The pockets create a solid shooting rest as well.

Did not know mystery ranch used to be Dana design. Was that a Bozeman company as well? When did they sell?

I can see the benefit of using the vertical pockets to shoot off of - for day hunting the pack is rather flat so anything helps.

Well, it’s lineage is a tiny bit complicated. Dana sold waaaaay back in the 1990s. Technically Mystery Ranch was never a part of Dana Design, but it was started by Dana Gleason after his non compete ran out, so many design elements have carried over. Here’s a list of interesting events that seem correct, but the source was rather generic so take it with a grain of salt.

That was an interesting read. Had no idea all the interplay between those companies. The sale to Yeti last year makes a little more sense now when you factor in that Dana would have been 70 years old by then. Will be interested to see how the sale impacts the business. Hopefully it’s an own, not control type relationship
