500gr arrow on 70lb draw?

No problem with 500 gr. There’s not a massive difference in drop at 50 yards
with 15-20 fps less.

I’ve been shooting 505-515 gr arrows the last several years with DW 70 lbs at DL 29.5” going 274-275 fps. I personally wouldn’t hesitate to use something in that ballpark if your draw length and poundage are there. Getting to a reasonable trajectory for your pursuit and comfort is key. Agree with comments that 270 to mid 280s is a nice place to be for tuning broadheads. Something that gets overlooked in my opinion is bow and shot noise. I feel like I notice the sound when I drop down to 450 or 475 gr arrows during the off season compared to my 500gr arrows. Probably just in my head though.

Another consideration is the range forgiveness between your 500-ish grain arrow and something lighter. The lowest I could go down to is 455 grains or so in my particular arrow shaft (once I change to lighter point, no collar, no wrap). Comparing the lightest configuration to my current setup, the down range drop/yd at 40, 50, and 60 yards just want significant enough to warrant changing things for me. Highly suggest you look at the data for your bow and arrow and see what is reasonable for you. Comparing the down range trajectory and drop per yard is helpful context if you get into the weeds….

After reading this thread and checking out the new arrow offerings from Terra Firma again, I'm into the idea of dropping back from 530gn to about 500gn again. I know the difference in the long run isn't really that big, but there is a chance I may be making slightly longer shots at fallow bucks and red stags over our winter months, so an extra bit of speed for more forgiveness in my trajectory might make a difference.

If the chance at water buffalo comes up for me I'll just go to a slightly heavier arrow again, but I know of many people who've shot them with 70# and 500gn and they've been just fine. Me shooting 78# should be more than enough.

I've never really felt the need to have an arrow of less than 450gn for the sake of more speed and a flatter trajectory, but with my 28in draw, if I were shooting 70# on a slower bow, I can see how others may want to go that way.
