Went out this morning for my son to try to fill his late season Idaho desert elk tag. At first light found a large herd of around 75-100 elk and made a play on them.

He made a great 211 yard neck shot dropping this big cow in her tracks. She was dead before her feet hit the ground. At just 16, the bugger has already harvested 5 bucks and 4 elk - he’s a killer!!!

150 grain scenar from the old Tikka seven mag added another critter to its kill list. Both my son and daughter managed to kill bucks in October and late season cow elk! Freezer is getting really full and we still have a January elk tag to fill.

Congratulations. Getting a young kids out hunting who’s one of my favorite things to do. Not to be disrespectful, but is a neck shot considered your best choice as opposed to a broadside double lung shot?

Kid has shot a lot - knows how to shoot and the elk weren’t moving. It’s a cow hunt looking to maximize meat. I told him to hold on the center of its neck and that exactly where it hit and she dropped right there. I would have shot her in the same spot.

Sometimes you do what you gotta do. My niece had to take a similar shot years ago. Glad he got it done.
