This will be brief. My best friend and tough ass Marine buddy and I got packed in roughly 13 miles with Vallecito Lake Outfitters September first. My tag didn't start until the third. Doug is an absolute professional. I'm not a horseman and haven't ridden since I was 14, 40 years ago. His animals were perfect for me. After getting dropped off and setting up camp, we spotted the only sheep of the trip. We never saw a ewe, only 1 ram the entire trip. The following day, I spotted him in the evening high on the mountain. Opening day he was feeding up early in the morning. We watched him leave the southeast face at 830ish. We made a plan to leave at 11am to get in position hoping he returned in the evening. The terrain was really steep and only game trails. At 315 we gained a position 200 yards below the ridge. Within 15 minutes the ram returned for an evening feed. We had sent up in a perfect spot. He watched with his 1 good eye before coming off the ridge. It took about 15 minutes for him to get comfortable. I was able to make a broadside double lung shot. The ram tried to run back over the ridge but, the shot was perfect. We were roughly at 12600k. We took him to the bottom of the bowl and left him in the shade. We returned to camp at 11pm. We got him back to camp at noon the following day. It was definitely a thrill of a lifetime. The meat is absolutely delicious and I think about this hunt often. I never could have done this without the Marine and Doug. 20240903_082255.jpg

Please remove Unit specific references. Sharing and publicizing unit #’s and unit information only exacerbates the hyper competitive nature of drawing tags in Colorado.

Per website rules:

  1. Posting specific unit numbers, while not against the rules for even for members in good standing, is still sometimes frowned upon by members depending upon the context of the post. A good rule of thumb to follow when discussing specifics of a unit is to ask for Private Messages or share information in private messages. While posting specific unit numbers is frowned upon, posting specific drainages or trailheads are grounds for much worse from the rokslide community lol. Use your common sense, use private messages, etc. we are all in this together and to help each other.

🤣 yep that’s going to take those .00001% odds to .00002%

Call it what you will, the post above yours is dead on. I’ve drawn 2 ram tags in CO, and was hoping to draw one more, but after looking at the odds this year compared to just a few years back, it almost does make sense.

The odds on desert these days aren’t much better than an archery tag.

Congrats on the great ram! But as others have pointed out, maybe scrub the unit number- it took me about 4 minutes in Google Earth to find the EXACT spot these photos were taken

Nice work. I agree with the others about removing unit specific details. I didn't even have to look it up on the map. As a local to this area, I immediately recognized the terrain features and knew where you killed this sheep.
