1st couple of days he was lost and confused. Chasing the flushing labs, working with other hunters and not me. Finally we started clicking again as the ol pen raise quail sure act a little different then a rooster.

The balance of letting the dog work with other hunters in your group and having him work for you can be challenging. The more you get them on those wild birds the quicker they make those adjustments from pen raised. Fun times.

I'm dealing with the same thing with my 9 mo GWP. Super smart dog, but the first time out it wasnt quite clicking for him. I knew the first year was going to be a struggle and as i get him out more and more he is picking it up. He has the benefit of working with my 4 yo lab/GWP cross so that is helping.

I will be taking my 10 month old Vizsla out this year. My expectations for him are high but not this year. This year is about learning, letting him make mistakes and having fun.

In my experience the best thing you can do is work them separately. The pup will rely on the older dog to find the birds. Working them one at a time will force the puppy to figure it out.

Agree 100%. I have a 2.5 year old and an 8.5 year old. To this day, the younger dog is so much better solo than with her bff Max. Max tore his CCL on the SD opener so it’ll be Ruby’s year to shine. Here’s a pic of a solo Missouri public land double that took Ruby all of 12 minutes. We went to some Iowa public after this, and I missed a chip shot 🤦🏼‍♂️757B8628-61E7-4EAF-B6B8-F116112D9EAF.jpeg

That's Awesome, I have a Brittany she is 2.5 years old and she is just starting to put it all together. If she could only retrieve a little better we would be set LOL.
