Hey guys. Thanks to all who have posted stuff they made with their sewing machine. It gave me the confidence to try and make a pack. After some trial and error sewing I have a functional pack I hope. Very similar to the nomad but some small differences. Let me know what you think. I am still waiting on some parts for the compression straps and stuff.

Wow! Looks very good! How long did it take you to make? And how tricky were those zippers at the top being that they're rounded?

I ordered the fabric off of EBay. It's 500d coated cordura in mossy oak brush. I think it is $10/yard. The rounded zipper wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The hardest part is sewing webbing onto the fabric with a home machine. I had the tension cranked all the way up to get a good stitch. It took me about 15 hours to make, but that is with a lot of tearing stuff out and doing it again. Trial and error. This is my first real sewing I have done so I learned a lot to say the least. Colonel00's post was very helpful. I am still going to make pouches, a load sling and top lid.

Another tricky part was figuring out how to make the long pocket on the back of the main pocket. Since I have never sewn anything I had some times I wanted to pull my hair out.

What's OPW?

Can we see more pics of the other side of the pack? Where is this pocket on main pocket you mentioned? What made you decide on that size of pocket? Weight? Amount of fabric? I too am designing a bat-wing pack (nothing new in pack design btw), and this looks badass!!!

Will try to get some more pics up. I basically decided to make this pack because I have a blue widow pack right now. Bi love it other than the suspension/frame I think leaves a lot to be desired with heavier loads. The pockets are the same size as the ones on my Eberlestock. If you look at the nomad and blue widow they are pretty similar. I tried to take the best of both packs and make it into one ( which is basically a nomad). Kifaru nailed this pack in my opinion for my needs. Originally I was going to modify my blue widow and put it on a kifaru frame. I decided to try and make a pack instead. Black is made of 500d cordura and I have used between a yard and two. That is with my mess-ups.

How did you connect your batwings. I have been trying to think of a way that would keep the strenght of material yet be able to handle the weight of objects within the pockets.

I sewed a piece of fabric that was about 13" long and a couple inches wide into the seam between the zippered pocket and the pocket that is open at the top. This gave me a "tab" that was 13" long and about 1.5" wide to sew to the back panel that attaches to the pack. I attached them using a zigzag stitch for strength. Should have plenty of strength for the weight it will carry. Hope that makes sense.
