My Colorado sheep hunt thread

check out Archery Ram success rates in Colorado. Last I did when I had a tag it was about 25%

I decided to not pass a legal ram since I really didn’t want to eat my tag 😬

I did actually miss a shot on a just legal ram, shot high. Felt horrible and wondered if I had blown my chance.

Luckily killed a couple days later on a better ram. But I know with archery nothing is guaranteed. Sheep hunting can be a grind and mental challenge. Stick with it and give all you have.

Good luck with the hunt

Oh and to your idea to avoid Drainage X in scouting I think that’s a lame idea! Do everything to stack the odds in your favor and go where you have the most opportunities and chance of success!

At least check it out to make sure it is what you think it is and are sort of holding out for. And really no one else is going to care where you killed your ram and if it’s in some new spot or not!

(Unless you want to give away free workout tips and just want to say you killed on the toughest sheep hunting where no one else killed a ram)

Heck go hunt the unlimiteds if you want to hunt sheep where they aren’t 😂

Good Luck - I can't think of anything much better than chasing Rams above treeline on Aug 1st...Hope you get a good one!

I'll never forget seeing my first bighorn in RMNP prob 35 years ago...just a fascinating animal.

Keep us updated!

There is only one other archery sheep tag holder, and no other seasons open in August. So other hunting pressure is very minimal. I assume I'll run into folks scouting for September tags for elk, deer, sheep, goat, etc....
That unit you are in you will not run into many hunters where the sheep are. Just recreational hikers everywhere. And they do push the sheep around depending on time of year. Glassed a lot of sheep in there and never seen a deer hunter anywhere in site. Although have seen a few random bulls in drainage X, but no one wants to put that effort in for them. Good luck. I will be following thread.

Got home late last night, with no ram, but had an amazing 4 days. Me and 2 buddies gave it everything we had and saw a ton of country, and spent hours and hours glassing stuff that looks like it should hold sheep, but saw none. The deer and elk were plentiful, and we ran into very few other people. We could watch all the peak baggers like ants marching on top of the 14ers. On the way back home I met up with my dad and picked up my brothers Side by Side to borrow for my upcoming week of hunting. After pondering "what next?" On the drive home, I'll plan to focus my efforts on and around Drainage X for my next trip out, starting on Friday. No regrets with checking out some other places first though. I know me, and I had to scratch that itch, so I would know for sure what was in those other drainages. 20250802_105745.jpg20250802_155110.jpg20250803_101104.jpg20250803_103819.jpg20250801_081219.jpg20250731_193735.jpg20250731_110256.jpg20250731_123621.jpg

Maybe so🤷‍♂️
But I think with a once in a lifetime tag, it's also about the story and the experience. I thought hard all summer about how to be intentional to make the experience what I wanted it to be. For me, it was important to check off 4 or 5 other locations besides drainage X first, so that I wouldn't always wonder "what if?". Also, just the chance to see more country.
Sounds like you might do things differently if you had this tag, and that's cool

The frame on that deer!

OP, you’ve probably already noticed by the comments above, but if you could remove the pictures of the elk and deer, that would save this thread. Landscape pics with the limited draw sheep hunt are fine, but collateral damage should be mitigated as much as possible to deer and elk.

And by extension, my comment as well.

I don’t see a mention of unit reference or major terrain references, I’m all about making sure we aren’t spot burning and I know the unit lilRS is in but no clue what area I doubt many people know where he is at

You’re not wrong, but I just did a post search, and then a google earth scan and it took me about 15 minutes to figure out where he is. I’m not trying to shit on anyone’s party (sheep tags are so effing rare and fun) but just being that persistent voice to not blow up cool areas.

I’m not nearly as good as some other guys on here at playing “where’s Waldo.”

It's pretty obvious where he is at. Pics 1 and 2 show some distinguishable mountains. He mentions there are only two tags so that is only four units, then says it has the highest overall elevation, mentions watching people bag 14ers narrows down what side of the unit he is on. To each their own I guess for sheep hunting not a huge ordeal but when you start putting up pics of above average deer and elk then everyone comes out of the woodwork.

I feel ya, I know that’s not his intention to give any goods away
