Talk to me about twist rates in a shorty 300 wsm. I called McGowan and the fella I spoke to recommended 10 and no faster.

I personally would go 1/9. It just gives you a little extra insurance if you want to go heavy with no down side.

1:10 will be fine to stabilize up to 220gr bullet at sea level with a velocity of 2730fps.
so if you hunt in low elevation and wanna shoot bigger than 200's get a 1:9 to be safe but a 1:10 will work

berger has a barrel twist calculator on their site if you ever wanna check.
Thanks, I looked at that, I was just wondering if there was some reason not to go with 9 twist. The McGowan fellow told me he'd still go with 10 twist even though I told him I wasn't planning on shooting any lighter bullets. ....?

I'd go with a 10 twist it'll stabilize up to 230 bergers no problem.
I recently got an 18" McGowan factory contoured tikka prefit with a .730 muzzle flare. It only weighs 2lbs, Im very happy with it using my 5/8×24 DT can

Sorry for the slow feedback on this. I carried this rifle on several hunts but never shot anything with it. I did end up taking the can off and using a Ti Pro brake on it. I didn't like not spotting my own shots. It kicks likes a kitten now. I also swapped the stock to an XLR Element 4.0. I really love that chassis and now they inlet for a Bumblebee. The velocity for those asking above 2850 with the Berger 200x20.

I am going elk hunting with @Jim Carr at the end of the month so we should get some feedback on the 200x20.View attachment 365504

Ryan Avery what magazine are you running with the Element 4.0 with the 200x20? Trying to put together a similar build and it seems that a long action is necessary for the longer bullets and haven’t found a magazine.
