Hea talking about smokeless powderDo you come off this abrasive in real life too? He asked for a muzzleloader recommendation not your diatribe on the state of black powder hunting.
That’s funny. One only has to do a quick search of dedicated muzzy forums including MML to see that CVA is well known for poor design and numerous QC issues. There’s nothing “very nice” about any CVA model especially is you’ve ever shot a TC, Knight or WA….
Which two Knights did you have that you sold for which CVA?I think you’re just spreading bullshit and you don’t really know what the hell you’re talking about. But that’s typical with you.
I sold two Knight muzzleloaders and bought a CVA. It was an extremely good decision.
You should have left the muzzle loader tags to the people who enjoy it.Well that would be my choice if it wasn’t for the requirement to use a muzzleloader![]()
Definitely check out woodsman arms. Dunno if you order one now if you’ll have it in time but worth the money.Drew a moose tag and in need of a muzzleloader that will reach out to 200 with open sights. must be 45 cal or larger.
I looked a little at a CVA MRX or LRX. I see that Blackhorn is now $200/lb so that probably is out. what other powder are folks using.
THanks for the thoughts and comments.
Never said i didn't enjoy it...You should have left the muzzle loader tags to the people who enjoy it.
sabots are okay. our only restriction is the caliber (>.45), open sights, and no smokeless powder.Just realized you said moose…those are big I think…never seen one outside a sporting goods store. Not familiar with Alaska regs, can you shoot a sabot or no? You may want to go with a 50 for that over a 45. Not a ton of bullet selection for b2b in a 45 that’s not going to explode upon impact on the brick wall that i imagine is a moose…I’d hit up woodman
I looked at the Williams sights and they don't list the Woodman rifles on their compatibility list. Are you running open sights on your Woodman? They show a peep option made in house but im not sure if the Williams globe sight would be compatible with their peep...Congrats. What state?
Just about any off-the-shelf muzzy will be good to 200 yards. CVAs are junk. I’d look at Woodman Arms, TC or Knight. Or find a used White.
Get a good rear peep and fine front fiber optic like the Williams Western Precision globe. 777 works fine if you don’t want to spring for B$209.
You could run an XS ghost ring. I think as long as the woodman is drilled for a front it should be workable with some elbow grease (sanding the globe so it matches the barrel dia). There is a guy on here and monster muleys that makes clamp on sights as well.I looked at the Williams sights and they don't list the Woodman rifles on their compatibility list. Yea 200-300 yards with open sites would take a serious amount of practice.I use Swiss powder, a 200-300y shot with irons is gonna take some serious practice even with the size of a moose's vitals. I bought a Tradtions MZ last year and tried the Hornady Bore Driver to see if the combination would allow me to shoot farther, but I couldn't consistently hit a 12" plate with the combination past 150y.
Are the moose really pressured in the area? I have found I can get closer to a moose than any other animal.
I’ve shot and killed with all of the above mentioned. Any new modern muzzleloader shoots like a single shot rifle other than you load it from the muzzle. Any of the newer powders work just fine 209, 777 and Pyrodex. I use smokeless in mine and Parker bullets. That’s funny. The Williams Western Precision (WWP) front globe attaches to any barrel with one screw. So that is widely compatible. The WA front fiber optic is nice but large (~.040”), so not really designed for long distance.I looked at the Williams sights and they don't list the Woodman rifles on their compatibility list. I looked at this blemish at a recent Sport show that Woodmans attended. It was like a scratch on the butt stock. If I needed a muzzy this would be one of my first choices2 blemish in stock![]()
