Hey gents. I am planning on hunting bears in central MT near the end of may. Given the snow level and the weak winter I am a little worried that it might be a little late to really get into them as they will likely be hunkered down during the day time. Any thoughts on a late spring hunt? Will i just be hunting to hunt or do you think that i may see some luck? I am planning on sticking to the creek bottoms in the cooler areas, and focus on early AM's and late PM's. I am also going to try and call them this year. Anyone have comments or opinions on this? Born and bred MT but this is going to be a very unique hunt compared to the traditional dive logging roads/hiking/glass method. Will be kind of boxed into about 3 different spots over 5 days and won't be able to pick up and move like we can traditionally.

No matter the year, it always seems to get better the later into may you hunt. I wouldn't worry about it or change your tactics at all.

I've had the same experience. Even in a low snow winter and a warm early spring the bear hunting is always best in the back half of May.

Boars are cruising for sows the tail end of May. I usually see as many bears the last two weeks of May as I do the first month of the season.

Not sure how spring bears are, but last September we saw a lot of bears active during the day. Mid morning all throughout the day. When I shot mine we spotted him around 3ish. There we about four other bears out with him too.
