Hello Everyone,

My hunting buddy and I are heading back out to MT this year, going to go in a bit deeper and stay a bit longer. Looking to lighten our load on the tent side of things. I have been searching for an affordable tent solution for 2 people. Came across the MSR Hubba Hubba. For the price is this a good solution or does anyone have any alternate products that have performed well in the past?

What time of year and what part of Montana? If you go when snow is a possibility I’d probably want something more Sturdy. Maybe a SO Cimarron or comparable shelter. Even a 2 person Hilleberg red label if the budget allows

How good of friends are you and your buddy? In a Hubba Hubba you ARE going to be cuddling at some point in the night.

The wife and I use one quite a bit backpacking for sheep, and it is snug. (And she doesn’t take up much space at 5’4”...) if you are at all claustrophobic then trying to get into your bag while bumping into and laying on your buddy could be problematic.

Depends on the time of year, area of the state, how comfortable do the two of you need to be..etc. the tipis are killer. Kifaru Tut or Sawtooth are awesome. Seek Tipis look nice. If you want to stick with MSR I’d go with a Mutha Hubba instead and have some extra room. I think any quality 3 season in a 3 person would do well for you unless you are coming out late season then I’d look hilleberg or something a bit beefier like that. REI should be having a garage sale soon. Good place to look to save some cash , geartrade, moosejaw.......y

I have the MSR Mutha Hubba 3 man tent. Good setup for two guys plus gear. Thinking about selling too if you’re interested.

Can’t go wrong with the hubba hunbba, that said I’ll only share mine with my wife...

take a look at the larger models from tarptent. I'm pleased with the initial quality of my scarp 1 which is a four-season double walled tent. Made in USA.

I really like the jack wolfskin Yellowstone line I have had real good luck so far with mine and my gossimer 2 both very sturdy and reasonable priced tents.

The Hubba Hubba is a great tent. However, it would be incredible snug with 2 men. I would look for a 3 or 4 person if you are looking to share a tent. Can split it up so that one carries the body and the other carries the fly and poles, or something like that.

My buddy and I each own a MSR Hubba Hubba NX. We take one when we go deep on sheep hunts. I'm average size and he is a stocky guy. It is snug with two but very doable and the double vestibules keep your pack and boots dry. We are there to hunt and don't find it a problem with the snug fit. The near vertical end walls add to the space for your feet...great feature. I think it is an excellent tent for the $$ and weight. Wouldn't want it in November when the nights are long though.

Iv spent many nights in the hh nx with 2 men, it’s definitely shoulder to shoulder, but at 4lb 8oz, everything in, it’s a good setup for any backpack trips. In my experience, a ground sheet is a must. After a couple days in wet weather, the bottom did start soaking through. After adding the ground sheet, I never had the problem again.

Atmosphere in BC has them at 20% off right now.
