Moving to Montana or Wyoming

I'd take Billings over Great Falls any day.

Same. Interviewed in Great Falls, it was “ok”. Wind was horrendous. Interviewed in Billings the next week. Night and day difference.

Billings is fine. I don’t worry about living here at all. I came from Cleveland so pretty much anywhere is better than that haha.

The trouble is, cities in the states you’re referring to that have amenities that make them what most of mainstream America considers livable or are within close proximity to trails, mountain biking, skiing, or rivers with trout in them, etc. attract all kinds of progressive and liberal types. Those places end up with the population centers and voters that determine what happens in the rest of the state.

I’m a 5th generation Coloradan and I lived in Montana for 20 years. There will never be enough conservative, hunting and fishing enthusiasts moving to western states to prevent what is already occurring in Montana and Idaho, and has already wrecked Colorado.

If you have the ability to make a living and support a family in rural parts of any western state, there are a lot of places you can still go and live the kind of life you want and have neighbors who generally will think like you do.
I think the exact opposite is taking place in Montana. I've lived here 40 years and it used to be a purple state governed by sensible moderates. No longer. There is not a single statewide elected office currently held by a Democrat. People say Californians are taking over but that's not what I see at all. Just hundreds of Texas plates all over the place. Montana is deep red and getting more so every day.

False. All the best towns are in Montana. Wyoming is terrible and should be avoided at all costs.

No no. Wrong

OP the only cool place to live in MT is called Circle. All the other places you should live are in WY.

Mortgage broker i was just having a conversation with told me almost 70% of homes in northwest wyoming are being purchased in cash or with an 80% down payment.

I make decent money, not 600K house money.
Who the hell affords these places? There are not that many great, I didn't say good paying jobs. Unless I am missing them?

Billings, Bozeman - how is the average blue hair, face piercing hippie working in a bookstore, "cafe" or yoga studio make it?

Yours is anoutdated understanding of what Bozeman is... the days of hippies working at the bookstore have been gone for a long time. There was a time up through the 90's and early 2000's you could be a dirtbag in Bozeman, work part time, and ski or climb the rest of the time. Those days have been gone for a long time, and those people are long gone. Anyone nowadays that appears to be such is either a trustafarian or living in a van down by the river.

Kudos to anyone that can pick up their family and move cross country. That is the pioneer spirit. However it seems to work out best for younger people still not rooted in. Ive seen family and friends move away as adults and it doesnt seem to go well always. Isolation for a stay at home parent while the other works, loss of family and friends for support, and in general starting over struggles. Unless a major change was needed a move an hour away would have worked better.
If you do make the jump dont buy a house right away. As much as I hate paying someone elses house payment its better than selling a year into ownership because you changed your mind. No one anywhere can tell you where YOU belong. You need to find it.
In the words of hot Brandy in Joe Dirt, you had a home all along, you just didn't know it!

Hey Noisy, that sounds wonderful to me :)
Heh. As long as you can live with legal weed, and a woman's right to abortion being enshrined in the state constitution. Both were recent citizen initiatives that passed against the wishes of the legislature and governor. Montanans still occasionally display an independent streak. :D

Best advice for all of these threads, we need to make this a plaque ( with hot brandy on it) and post it for when these questions arise
