Moving to Montana or Wyoming

Hey transplant, here are the rules: only the people born in these places get to play the don’t move here game haha just messing
I’m an immigrant. Been in Wyoming since 1990. But my wife’s a native, so between that and 35 years here, I’m claiming honorary status - Molon Labe.

I get it man, I’m from co few generations deep on moms side, dad was a transplant, I’ll likely be a transplant in AZ someday… it just kills me that loads of folks showed up to Co and then a year later are claiming, it’s full! I’m like yeah it was full in 1985, whatever we are doing now is just getting silly

Living where you like to vacation isn't all its cracked up to be.
That’s true for me. My wife and I honeymooned on Kauai and I’m eager to go back. But I couldn’t spend the rest of my life there. OTOH, some people are surf bums, moved there from someplace else, and never looked back.

hope you're rich!
Yeah, true, But there's lots of downward pressure on prices right now due to all the economic uncertainty. I overheard a realtor in Helena a few days ago saying we went from six weeks of inventory to six months of inventory practically overnight. And of course if you want to poke around on the Hi-Line or northeast Montana, there are plenty of nice homes at reasonable prices.

But yeah, if you want to move to Bozeman or Missoula, forget it.

I recently asked a similar question referring to ID or western MT and it didn't get a lot of traction.

Seems it would be wise for RS folks currently in WY, MT or ID to welcome like-minded people compared to what happened in CO over the past 30 or so years.

I suppose if you consider Mordor an appealing vacation destination you’ll like Billings.
I see over and over people referring to Billings like its the slum of all slums. That tells me that people aren't well traveled.

Is billings a really nice place with no undesirable people? Absolutely not. Its also not the Bronx, or Gary Indiana either.

I take my kids to Billings all the time. Its perfectly fine.

Aren’t well travelled? I’d say anyone that considers Billings anything other than a 3rd rate destination isn’t well travelled. It’s one thing to go shopping there for a day, it’s another thing to live there. My parents lived there in the 50’s, my daughter currently lives there. She can’t wait to leave.

You compared Billings to Mordor, a post apocalyptic hellscape. If you feel thats what Billings is like, then you havent been to many bad areas (not well traveled) or, you are exaggerating and blowing it out of proportion.

Ive seen guys on this forum talk about Billings like its a place you dont want to get out of the car and that you are in grave danger just for being there. If thats how you feel, than your travel to diverse areas of the country is limited.

The OP works in construction, downward pressure on the economy is not exactly at two player swing when the sector seeing the pull back is the one he works in…

You really have no sense of humor, that’s obvious.

I’ve been all over the world on dozens of trips, including many 3rd world countries, as well as 43 of the US states. I’m fairly well travelled, even though “well travelled” is relative term. I couldn’t fathom moving to Billings as a 1st or 50h destination were I wanting to move to the mountain West. It does have a good meth supply, and beautiful refinery views though lol.

The only way I’d consider living there is if a good paying job in a highly specialized work field took me there. And then I’d be looking elsewhere.

Driven through billings a few times I would take great falls over billings, it’s got serious meth vibes, and I would know I work in east Denver…

once my wife owns it outright we can talk haha but she is more attached to that property than she is me I think haha 🤣 but it’s a special place so I get it, you know how to cowboy some? It’s gonna be something learning as a 36 year old man child…
I think I have a cowboy hat from when I was 5 still…not sure where it is though. Outside of going to watch a couple rodeos a year, I know nothing about cowboying. I wrangle Excel spreadsheets.

My wife is from Gilbert and wants to move back to Arizona. We just refuse to go down to the valley. Prescott is on the short list but the only way it’s going to happen is if somebody gives me a place to live.

But I never recommended moving to Billings. I did recommend utilizing it for its shopping and amenities as almost anyone who lives in driving distance in rural Wyoming or Montana does.

I also wouldn't want to live there. I moved to Wyoming to get away from places just like it. My comment wasn't soley targeted at you and for sure how strongly worded my responses were are derived from past posts about Billings whenever the topic comes up.

Yeah I get it Prescott is stupid expensive! I would rather hug a cactus nekked than live in the valley that is for sure haha 🤣 honestly running a spread sheet is probably a lot more important to raising cows than just about anything else
