For those that take it out of its factory package is a quart freezer bag big enough after cooking or is gallon needed

Save some weight and zip locs dont take as much room when done with them. Main reason i ask though is i bought a couple cans that i need to pack into a zip loc

I take one mtn house in the original package and put the rest in zip locks. Save space and weight, packing in and out. Then re-use the original mtn house package to cook my other ones in the ziplock.

Gethuntin, I understand what you're trying to get at. Yes, it works. I've only done it on a three day hunt though.

I wouldn't want to pour boiling water into a ziplock. And then I also certainly wouldn't want to hold onto it to eat it.

It works fine as long as it's a freezer bag and after the required rehydrate time, you can hold on to them. Definitely saves you some space beforehand and definitely after you're done eating it.

Sorry i was on my phone and got right to the poit but didnt explain all that well. Yes i will be using a freezer bag and i have read others doing the same but just wasnt sure if after they rehydrate if a quart bag was big enough to handle 2 servings?

I use quart ziplock freezer bags all the time for packing and eating dehydrated meals. The quart size should be plenty big. I fill them with water and then put them in my sleeping bag to insulate it while it rehydrates. As long as you don't have a leak it works great. If your bag has a small pinhole leak, just put it in your beanie hat.

Yep I use quart freezer bags as well for my DIY meals.
Usually 1cup dry to one cup water is about one 250cal serving, 2cups = ~500cal.
Depends on the meal of course, but usually I do 2cups anyway.

Yes the bags get a little soft, so I usually use a reflectix cozy during rehydrating and eating.

I also use a lot of the zip-lock vac bags. Some even stand up.
