Mountain house expiration dates question

Do I REALLY need to follow the expiration use by date on mountain houses? I have some that are only a year past expiration and I'd hate to throw them out for no reason.

What does everyone else do?

Actually I believe the date I'm seeing is the manufacture date.... Phew.

But while we are on the subject, do mountain houses ever go bad?

i think it is a 25 year lifespan, I did retail training on it. so I know it is good for more than 15 years

I've eaten some pretty old MH with no ill effects. I believe MH says 12 years for the regular bags. The steel canned stuff is even longer.

12 years for the bags, 25 years for the cans I believe. I got an email from them a couple months back stating they are doing testing to determine how much longer the bags can last. They have eaten stuff 18 years old with no problems.
