Most expensive piece of gear you've lost on a hunt?

I lost a sill tarp ($100) and all the boned meat from a sheep. We had a grizzly come into camp and take the whole works while we were out....after I had hauled it over 2 mountains to get back to camp. I’m still sour over that.

Lost about $3000 of gear on the drive to Montana once. Bag flew off the trailer. It was packed/loaded by my idiot friends. Packs boots clothes etc.

Arrows, pocket knives, gloves, hats, face masks, but nothing worth more that $50 at this point but I have come close with several items but walked back to find them. If I lose something it is an excuse to buy something better that I couldn’t because I couldn’t justify it with a fully functional piece of equipment still in the arsenal.

It seems like I can’t go on a hunt without losing something. I’ve lost knives, a release, can’t count the pieces of clothing. Most expensive was probably an 870 12 gauge I left leaning against a gate post. Went back ten minutes later and someone had already nabbed it.

Lost a waterproof digital camera and a primaloft jacket on a ptarmigan hunt on the Alaska peninsula, on separate outings. Found the jacket the next year but it was shredded. Also lost a really nice Kabar skinner with a gut hook hunting white tails in Pa.

Effing EXO 3500 left behind by a dude that went with me. Was my buddies pack. Left it at a campsite, realized it several hours later after we packed up and moved to a new area and someone had already picked it up. That was an expensive trip.

This is almost too painful to type...lost. completely restored Carsten Pintail marsh boat...never saw the water!

Cliff notes version of the story:
We (me plus two older friends) were on the way to Kansas pulling my duck boat with Pintail strapped to truck cap rack. We drove through the night from Ohio to try and hunt the first day. Stopped to get gas about an hour from destination and my friend points to roof of truck...Pintail was GONE!!! The other friend (retired guy) had been driving so I could sleep. He could say nothing other than he thought it got a little windy when he was driving....not only was boat gone, it ripped the rack mount and bolts right out of the truck cap!!

What really made this such a bummer was the fact that my two young boys had spent that entire summer helping rebuild (refiberglass, paint, gator-glide, hydro turf) the boat.

We tried looking for the boat along the highway and reported it to authorities but no luck....would have loved to actually use that boat!!!

Not terribly expensive but I've sprayed a handful of filet knives off my in laws cleaning table into their canal in Fla. I just plan on buying 2 everytime we go to visit. We've also had a few rods jump out of rod holders when it gets rough on the way out.

Turned out it was. It was a bonus that it happened after I had pics of the bull in my avatar. Double bonus that the SD card was OK. I was sweating that the rest of the trip.

Left a rangefinder hanging on a small pine in Montana, but went back and retrieved it.

Dropped my pack to hustle to cut off a bull in Wyoming and did quite a few loops before I found it again.

Not hunting... a meth-head broke into my buddy’s place and stole a ton of his tools and equipment and gear. The scumbag got all of my ice fishing gear that I’d left there because we were returning in a few weeks. It’s astounding how fast that adds up. I hate thieves.

Been pretty lucky having lost very little the last 35 years

lost a pocket knife in the woods as an early teen. Dropped it out of the stand and the ground must have eaten it because it was nowhere to be found

lost not one but two turkey calls out of my vest last year. Can’t believe that was the first time that had happened. Lost a striker once a long time ago so I guess that counts

had a buddy turn his boat over heading into the swamp to duck hunt one morning. His Benelli didn’t make it out of the water

I've permanently lost two items. First was a Kuiu down jacket. No clue what happened with it. This past weekend I lost a Benchmade pocket knife while checking trail cameras. Not going to make a trip against just to look for it. Hoping that I find it when I go back out in a couple of months but will not hold my breathe. I will be replacing it before then.

I've temporarily lost a few items.

On one hunt in Mexico my rangefinder was put down during the commotion of going after a buck. Came back and could not find it. Looked and looked and noticed a cow that was not there previously. So I made a wise remark about the cow finding it. Sure as hell I walked up to the cow and there was my range finder.

On another hunt I lost my wedding band. While it was not much money, I caught hell from the wife. She was not keen on me just replacing it as it would not have the same "meaning". So this fool went on a fool's errand to go back out and find it. Did what I could to "kind of sort of" trace my steps while I was hunting. Did get to one spot that I knew that I took my gloves off. The sun was just right and my wedding band was there plain as day. I should just go buy a few of them and not tell the wife!

this makes me think of “oh brother where art thou” - he has to have the original wedding ring but it’s at the bottom of a lake. She said her peace and counted to three...

2020 Archery hunt in Idaho.... Took a pretty good tumble on a steep hillside got back up, shook myself off and kept hunting. A couple hours later i went to check in with my hunting buddy and realized that I was missing my Rino Garmin... Circled back up the hill where i took the tumble but didnt find the exact point.

It was steep with a lot of ground cover undergrowth that i tripped on. Because of the undergrowth , i didnt leave a lot of tracks to backtrack. That combined with extreme steepness meant it wasnt easy to find the spot

I received a case knife that had a set of different blades as college graduation gift from a favorite uncle of mine. I left it in the woods after cleaning a deer, never to be seen again. I really hated that, as that knife meant a lot to me.
