Myself and a buddy had a couple Bergara and couldn't get them to shoot for our style of hunting and shooting. 7/8" groups @ 100 yards was the best we could muster. If our goals were for 300 yards in, that would've been acceptable.

What's your expectation for the rifle regarding shooting distance, weight limit, stock style (classic vs tactical hunter) etc?

I like a classic stock, I'm not super picky on other details but I'm looking for a backcountry hunting rifle

Dont get me wrong, my savage 110 will shoot darn well. 3/4@100 for a 3 shot group. My bergara ridge will shoot under 1/2 in 5 shot groups and is a much nicer rifle all around for not much more money.

The ridge is a heavier contour barrel and it’s also threaded. Both are very accurate. You can get the SP version in the ridge which is ideal if you’re shooting a can.

Maser M18 comes with a 5 shot sub MOA guarantee. I’ve got one in 6.5 PRC and it lives up to its guarantee with factory Hornady ammo. Not much aftermarket support yet though.

Id keep my eye out for a factory Remington Titanium long actioned rifle in a standard bolt face (270 Win, 30.06 etc) or a Short action mag face. It's light, it'll shoot, and you can always upgrade it with any gunsmith

These seam to offer a lot for the price. Also come in lighter than a lot of rifles.

My best shooters off a bench are a ruger American and my browning Abolt.
How are they prone or off shooting sticks? I only ask because I've had some amazing field shooters that I couldn't hold MOA off the bench. And I know that has alot to do with me and my inability to transfer my dialed-in prone-style recoil management, addressing the rifle etc. to the bench shoots. Just curious

Barrett Fieldcraft Missed the <$1k. I have a Savage 10FP that shoots very well. A Ruger I had in 6.5 CM also shot very well.

I have helped put together 10 Ruger American Predators in 6.5CM or .308 and all shot .7 moa or better. We have had 3 of the 6.5’s consistently be under .4 moa. Sand the barrel channel on the stock, cut the trigger spring (ours are all right around 1.5 lbs), level up your scope and have some fun. For around $375 depending on location you can get a gun that shoots really good and that you don’t care about shooting the piss out of it.

I’ve yet to miss with the browning. Put a moose down from 200 yards using a stick in a boat that was rocking. I’ve yet to shoot anything with that American. Though I almost squeezed a round off on a caribou at 600 yds. Decided not to, with the 20mph cross winds and not knowing what the terrain was like behind him. My boat was 500 yds away from me. There was grass sticking out of the water closer to the bou, and I didn’t feel it would have been an ethical shot.

I amend my statement on the Swaro thread to now suggest one could get a $500 pair of bins and TWO Savage rifles for the cost of a pair of SLC's. LOL

Cheapest shooter out there IME is the Ruger American, but it also has the worst stock.

I agree it's hard to find a factory rifle today that doesn't shoot, so long as you avoid Ruger 77's and Remingtons. ;)
