Moose Hunt Cartridge and Bullet

30 cal and larger does very well in Ak; moose hunts turn into bear hunts frequently. My best bullet experiences over 32 seasons have been with factory and reloaded Barnes, but I have not shot Brown bears or Moose over 325 with them for a multitude of reasons. Say what you will about Barnes, they are very accurate in my rifles; 30-06 and .338WM, they hold their weight and penetrate deep. I used to shoot Caribou and Black bears out to 500 plus but not getting those opportunities these days. Both of those animals are much easier to punch through compared to Moose. Most guys limit shots on Moose to 300 ish, partly so they can identify brow tines and judge width on the racks, but moose are heavy boned and muscled and really smash bullets to bits. It takes a good bit of energy to plow through and get to the vitals on angled shots and any shedding of bullet mass affects penetration significantly. Don't count on a perfectly positioned, unobstructed moose standing broad side. Many, many times I've had to move closer to thread a shot through brush at a bull that would not leave his honey hole. It's not typically difficult to move within 75-150 yds of a bull, and you may call them closer if they are close to the rut.

Yeah its a absolute wrecking ball ...killed a nice elk last year at 513 yards folded up like a cheap lawn chair...a black bear this spring at 1225 yards instant drt. Those 245s started at 2875 have some serious jam.
I’ve been running the 245s in my 300 PRC, and that’s when the cartridge really came alive for me. It’s been a devastating setup so far. I’ve only used it on Nilgai (many) and Elk (mostly long range), but the performance has been extremely impressive.

Im glad you got to try it.... another bullet that really makes it sing is the 215 target hybrid.... I run those as well with stellar results in 3 of my 30 cal magnum rifles ... I also run the 180 target hybrids in my 7mm prc out of 20" barrel at 2812 with a es of 6 over 5 rounds then did 3 rounds of 3 with a es of 7 and a sd of only 3.2 fps. Prints Itty bitty 200 yard clover leafs. And soon once my 6.5x300 wby shows up I'm going to try the 140 target hybrid. Should be around 3300-3350 comfortably.

6.5 PRC with 147 eldm would be a super safe choice. I might be real tempted to go 6cm with the eldms as well though.
I shot the 147 eldm quiet a bit under 300 its a bit splashy but kept off shoulders its fine. I do like the eldms but berger definitely makes the better around bullet. Less splashy typically far more consistent lot to lot . And not as explosive but on deer and exp if your a lung shooter the eldm is the bullet for sure... im more of a high shoulder guy myself.
