Hey Fellow Roksliders-
So I had the opportunity to go up to Alaska for an amazing moose hunt with my dad this last fall and it has already given me the itch to go back up there. We did the Bethel experience this year, and would like to try something a little different, even though this experience was great. So we have been talking about trying to get hooked up with Tok Air and do a combo hunt for moose and caribou and take a few weeks. So my question is, am I biting off more than I can chew by trying to do both in one trip? Has anybody else tried this and been successful? Are there other places that people would recommend to try before the Tok area if we wanted to harvest both a moose and a caribou? Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

By the way, I am cross posting this to the caribou side to see if I can get a few other opinions / views by people.

Combo hunts are pretty common for residents in some units. I have been involved in many, and personally tagged both on a hunt two years ago. There are some considerations though as a non-resident:

You are limited to the units you can hunt as a NR hat would contain both. For example, you can't hunt unit 13, which is where probably a majority interior resident combo hunting takes place. Other areas have non-overlapping seasons, draw tags for one species, etc, so read those regs pretty carefully.

In the area that Tok Air serves, one major portion (Unit 20E - 40 Mile Country) allows a hunter to have either a moose tag OR a caribou tag, but not both. I think that would essentially limit you to 20D, Zone 2 if flying with them.

Personally, I would suspect your idea might be best served with a mid trip move, focusing on one species at a time. Either that, or prioritize one species and consider the other a nice bonus if it happens. Meat care would also be a legitimate concern on a extended multi-species trip, and pre-arrangement of meat pick up options and freezer space would be required.

I definitely concur with the idea of targeting each species in different areas with a relocation move in between. Out of Tok (and maybe with Tok Air) you would go in for caribou the first week of September, and then get moved to your moose location somewhere near the 10th. Your transporter would definitely be able to advise you of locations and logistics involved.

If you're thinking both species in one camp, it can be done but I think it's more of a hat trick than most might realize. Allow for extra time no matter what.
