I tried firing up an old thread but I figured maybe better to start my own. I have a few questions for guys who have been out there and done it before. Former BC resident with a stone on the wall, but havent done bighorns yet.

1. How are bugs come mid September? I’m used to crazy bugs in some areas, given the dry year and the nighttime lows I think I’d be fine with a tent without netting?
2. How is the wind? I see old weather reports with 20+mph wind daily at elevation. Is that a realistically constant wind or just a mid afternoon peak after the sun gets cranking? I figure it affects the insulation I bring as well as the tent style. Looking at a Durston Xmid or a pyramid style tent. I was using a tiger wall with a buddy, but it’s not the best in the wind and I’m going solo.
3. How aggressive are the bears, particularly when the dinner bell has been rung? I’ve always used bear spray in the past but that was in BC populations that had been hunted (until recently). I figure I always have the rifle as backup. In the past I’ve always slept on my food, but that appears to be illegal in MT. Are guys really bringing an ursack along?
4. I’m expecting ~100 tags sold and 60 hunters in my unit opening day. Mountain goat is open the week before. What is typical sheep behavior after all that pressure? High and tight in finger ridges or do they head for treeline or actually in the timber? First and last light are my priorities, but how does glassing work out if they are in the woods?
5. What is the Etiquette around going after the same ram as another guy? I’ve heard of 20+ hunters in a popular spot on the opener in my unit. I know that spot is popular for a reason but I’m interested in avoiding it. Very different than the last sheep hunt I was on where we ran into an outfitter for moose on the way in, didn’t see anyone for 8 days and ran into the same outfitter on the way out with our ram. Seems like everyone would be cock blocking eachother.

I guess lastly, is it worth bringing along a wolf tag or any other tag? Biologist said not really and I’m inclined to believe him.

I’m going again this year. Last time I was there bugs weren’t an issue. Wind is what it is sometimes it’s windy other times it’s not terrible. We only saw one other sheep hunter. He was a local and was eating right in camp. We ran into him and asked about bears and food and he said he never thinks about it. Said it’s really nothing to worry about. We saw 2 big black bear no grizzly bear. Without horses there’s no way in hell I’d shoot anything besides a ram or billy in there. I ended up getting hurt so I really couldn’t hunt how I wanted to and we didn’t find any sheep. We did find a nice dead head ram though.
