Three Montana legislators have drafted a bill that would raise nonresident base hunting fees by more than 500%.

New norm is to pass on fees to Non-residents. Not a huge problem to me, as I see it a way for Residents to not have their fees raised. This coming from a Non resident.

That's the benefit of being the resident of a state, low fee's. I believe states do the right thing by raising prices on nonresident not residents. When I go hunt other states I expect to pay for it and I'm okay with that.

From $15 to $100. I don't see that as big problem. If I really wanted to hunt there, $85 increase would not hold me back. It might keep out the undesirables, but not likely.

Yeah, the percentage increase is misleading imo. Is it a large percentage increase? sure. Is it a large $ increase? No. The buck I shot this last year in Montana was probably 70$ per pound of meat.

No. Just all the non residents who moved here from other states are rich. They jacked up the housing prices. I assure you, many residents here are not rich and can’t afford housing.

I would expect this to be the tip of the iceberg, if it passes they will move forward with tag fee increases in short order. Wyoming was the test dummy and it played out exactly like they hoped it would.

I remember when CO raised the resident elk tags from $30 to $46 I think. I said "Holy crap.....that's a 53% increase.......don't tell the CDOW, but I'd be willing pay even more".

Yep... the $85 increase isn't even going to be noticed... The multi-state hunting craze is so popular that If Montana added $800 to the NR Combo, they would still sell out every year.. and have people upset they didn't draw every year.

Montana should raise the price at least one zero. That'll attract the customers who you can relate with. They'll have Montana's best interests for sure. You don't want some blue collar schmuck who has parallel views and interests roaming your public land, you'll be better off with some wealthy arrogant pricks.

The increase from $15 to $100 is insignificant in the overall cost of a western hunting trip. Although, as a resident, I also feel the increased fees should be shared by both residents and non-residents. Possibly higher increase for non-resident, but both should be impacted if additional revenue is needed.

Not the case at all. I moved to Bozeman Montana in 98, it was actually affordable. Then the Yellowstone club took off and the billionaires moved in driving prices sky high. This drove me to NW Montana 10 years ago, you could still get a house or a lot for a good price, now the billionaires have started moving in. Now prices in the valley have almost tripled. We have lost a huge portion of the work force, restaurants service sucks, no labor for construction, and a dam burger is $20. The working class residents of Montana are not wealthy, we are struggling. We all ask ourselves is it worth being poor to live in a place that has so much recreation or do you move and visit a few times a year. Currently I am choosing to pay high prices for everything local so I can have the opportunity to recreate in this state. If the non resident tag seems to much start applying in Wyoming.
