All,
I realize this is a fairly general thread, given that there is a ton of opportunity in Montana to go out and kill a bear, but I would like to garner some ideas and opinions on if I actually have a chance at this. Let me start by giving some back story.
I currently reside in Texas, but lived in White Sulphur Springs, MT for a stint. Great place, great people. While I did do some cowboyin, I didn't get time with a pack and a rifle. I had heard tale of there being some good opportunity in the tenderfoot to go kill a bear, and I saw plenty of them when I lived there, however, I also heard that it could be a hound hunters haven. Nothing against hound hunters, but me and my brother plan on doing a true spot and stalk.
I guess my first question would be is it gonna be possible, do we hold a chance at putting down a black bear? We've hunted our whole lives, but not in the Western big game scene. I'm an avid waterfowler and turkey hunter, while my brother focuses just a bit more on the big game stuff.
Second question would be location. I'm not asking for any specific spots, but I would prefer to be in Unit xxx given my familiarity with the area and having some connections there. Has anyone potentially hunted this unit and had success?
Lastly, some general thoughts about gear. We were originally going to try central Idaho, but changed to Montana given my familiarity and the fact that I have a guide friend up there willing to join us for a couple days of the hunt. I don't want to abuse this, though. I would like to come in with a solid plan and the right gear. We've got good apparel and wearables (i.e. Stone Glacier, Sitka, etc.), is there anything that you figure you couldn't go without or might be looked over as a newcomer?
I also should mention that the only real scouting I can do is electronic given me being across the country. We appreciate any and all insight, as we'd really like to put down a bear or two. I do realize that the hunt is never just about putting down an animal, so I'm looking forward to it regardless.
Thanks- Alex
