He wrote about what happened as well, must have been with one hand, but plenty of time mending up I suppose. After the initial attack the bear came on him again and attacked him a second time which caused more severe injuries. The whole time Todd had a handgun. Only after surviving the second attack did he think of pulling it out. Must've been totally trusting the bear spray. He said the charging bear ran right through the orange spray, so fast that it had little effect I'm guessing.

I think I would have had the gun out as soon as I saw a sow with cubs.

Man. Makes you rethink the bear spray is better than a gun.

Dude is a bad ass and has a sweet scar to prove it. I will still trust my spray, tough to say as I have never been in the situation but I think people tend to think that if they send a cloud in front of the bear it will stop them but if you could hold off it would be better to blast the bastard right in the eyes at 5-10 yards. I know that is easier said than done

My Buddy in Bozeman had a Grizz take 1 of his elk hind quarters 2 weeks ago. they are definitely out of control in multiple areas

Biggest problem with a gun is just what happened in this instance. He never even thought about it after the second attack. I've visited with one mauling victim and two other guys that were bluff charged. All were rifle hunting and none fired a shot.

My personal belief is that bear spray is for shit. If you have a bear nosing around camp and you hit it solid in the face, it may leave for good or it may not. If you have a charging bear and you hit it solid in the face I believe that you're still going to get mauled and there's a fairly decent chance you'll end up dead. It's also my believe that, the only real reason to bring bear spray is to use it to spice up your dinner.

maybe if this was a boar and not a sow defending her cubs the spray would be more effective? think about you defending your children, you will fight to the death for them, maybe when its a sow and cubs you better just pray you can sneak away unnoticed. or maybe fire a couple warning shots and one hand have pistol and the other bear spray....

After reading this i'm convinced in Grizz country a pistol is the way to go. Shoot at the first sign of aggression.

Hunted that drainage/area several times over the last few years. Definite pucker factor when walking in and out in the dark! That dude is a badass.

Stay safe.

Adrenaline is amazing stuff. I bet he didn't feel any pain until he reached the hospital.

I'm convinced either (gun or spray) can be much more appropriate than the other depending on the situation. A young, curious nuisance . . . spray 'em down and teach 'em a lesson to avoid humans, and no paperwork. Aggressive bear, no question, put 'em down.

You can keep grizz country. Don't know if I'd get out of the pickup without a big bore rifle or 12ga loaded with slugs.

I always have my pistol on my side here in Western WY griz country. . I also pack bear spray usually as well, but through my many encounters with grizzlies, I truly believe, that there is NO 16oz can that is going to stop them when they are determined on getting something. Had a friend charged years ago while guiding who emptied a full can just like this scenario and it did nothing to stop the bear...But his .45-70 and 3 rounds over the next charges were what saved his life and his clients. Bear spray can be effective, but I am in no way trusting my life to a can

If a bear came 80 yards that may be a sign that spray is not going to cut it. I'm not as far as troutbum, I believe spray, especially for black bears has its place. But then again I take a gun

I practice grabbing my spray with my left hand and .44 with my right. I want both ready to go in case I have advance notice.

S&W 329PD is worn cross draw style pn my left side so I can grab it with either hand (in case I get knocked down and am unable to use my right hand). If a grizz wants you, it will take you. A gun is little protection but better than a camera.

i wonder why if he had a gun he never reached for it?
bear attacked him twice, maybe she was on him so fast he could only get to one of them. or trusted what all experts say about the spray, as others said i have a hard time believing that can will stop a sow protecting her cubs
lucky to be alive, I'm glad its not worse, incredibly calm after that and a 3 mile hike...

I keep looking at his scalp flopped over on his ear as he relatively calmly explains what happened.

It's pretty easy to sit here and wonder why he didn't do this or that...Reminds me of a great Mike Tyson quote..
"Everyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth"

I have six cans of spray, four of the UDAP 18 magnum. Never had to use them, hope they expire unused. But it does make a guy wonder. I deal with grizzlies for six weeks of guiding until most of them hibernate. I trust the spray. I have to.

A couple things that might've helped in this case...Put a tree between you and the charging bear. Might slow him down enough to get a good dose up his nose. I still think if you have good spray and are close enough, and you put a charge right up a bear's nose there is no way in the world it'll not deter him. But it's most important to have a good partner with you, who also has spray and has the balls to charge a bear and spray him if you are being attacked. That's the deal I make with the guys I take out.
