My buddy and I will be headed to Montana for our first ever elk hunt. We are going to be rifle hunting and backpacking in not scared to walk a ways and was wondering if anyone could give us some tips on areas to hunt or just tips in general. Thanks for your time fellas.

Willing to hunt anywhere we can find a good number of elk. Not gunna be very picky this first year and try to use it as a learning curve looking at snowcrest or tabocco roots maybe

I'm assuming you mean Tobacco Root range? If so, there is great hunting there. Grab a map and google earth. Pin point Elk looking areas and go put boots on the ground. If it looks elky they are there. I know local guys who hunt them and do very well.

All of SW Montana is good. Pick the most nasty dark timber you can find thats 1 mile + from the road and they won't be far away. Expect a bunch of pressure opening weekend of rifle. Be on the look out for the grizz, 2 people were attacked in less than 2 weeks in SW MT.

We are thinking later in the season for going out. Thanks for your help guys
