My question is when you put in for a permit and it says First & Only choice does the only part mean you can't put in for a second choice? I can't find a definition to First & Only in the book.

I know it sounds like a dumb question but I'm curious if the "only" means something different?

Thanks

I have a pretty good idea of where you are applying. Correct…. first and ONLY choice. You don’t need a second choice anyway because your first choice is an unlimited permit that you’re guaranteed to draw. Right?

Isn’t that because if drawn to can only hunt in that unit? I think once you pull a special permit in some units you can only hunt that unit for the season. Not positive on this.

That was my thought also, wasn't sure if it meant only choice to apply for or only choice to hunt...

It must be your #1 choice for applying and it must be your only unit applied for to draw a tag. Usually it’s only for archery only elk tags, but looks like there’s at least a couple that also include rifle and muzzy. MT does this to actually give better draw odds for both the rifle and archery tags. The archery tags that we know as “unlimited” wouldn’t be that way anymore if we could apply for them on a second choice basis. Having a first and only choice for bow hunters also keeps them out of the draw for the tag that includes a rifle season. Montanas draw and regs are quite confusing for someone who hasn’t spent a lot of time looking at them.

To add on to the hunting of other branch antler bulls in other units, that is how every special draw tag works. Once drawn you are not able to hunt an antlered buck or branch antlered bull in any other unit. So the first and only term only applies to your application.
