Finally started my drive to Montana. This year it’s a solo trip but hopefully next year isn’t. Should be there Tuesday evening and start hunting for a cow on some BMA land. Will try and post updates when I can.
I'm leaving for the Jackson, MT area on Friday to try and redeem myself from my failed general archery tag. I'll have 8 more days to get it done and a good chunk of private land to hunt on. I'm really hoping to bring home my first elk!
Went to the bma this morning and signed in and was driving to the hunting area and saw multiple groups of elk. One group of 8 bulls and two large groups of cows. One of the groups of cows was headed towards the bma I’m hunting. I got parked and got everything ready and headed towards where I had seen the cows going to verify they crossed the fence. They did right where I thought they would and kept heading south. I followed the trail for more than half a mile and here and there saw where it looked like elk were splitting off. Finally the trail played out in some blowdown. I circled around but couldn’t find any sign. Went and sat on a ridge and did some glassing but only saw a few mule deer. Hopefully tomorrow goes better.
No luck around Dillon. Saw lots of elk on private. Had to cut the trip short and head home a few days early. I learned a lot and saw some beautiful country though.
