Does anyone have any experience with the units around Darby, MT? Specifically 240,250 and 270. How is the elk herd in that part of the state?
Thanks in advance!

There used to be an abundance of elk in the West Fork (250), however it's been decimated. I wouldn't concentrate your efforts here if I were you.

HD 240 isn't known for big bulls or an abundance of elk either, but they are there.

HD 270 would be your best option amongst the three, IMO.

250 is a draw only and beginning to produce some great Bulls.

240 can and does produce giant Bulls but the populations are low and the country is ruthless. I would look elsewhere.

Still good populations in 270 though the hunting pressure is very high during gun season. Lots and lots of roads and lots of burns. Mostly road hunters so anyone who is willing to hike in a little further will be sitting good.

Good advice already given. The elk there, you just have to be willing to go to them. Go ahead and pick up a Bitterroot National Forest Map (south side); you can get one here: http://www.nationalforestmapstore.com/product-p/mt-2.htm Look for areas away from the roads (at least 2 miles), and not just the designated Wilderness. Areas in which roads are closed during hunting season and areas that are closed to motorized use all provide elk security cover that they will seek out.
