Model 70 FWT Compact: 7mm-08 or 6.5 Creedmoor?

I prefer the 7mm08 over the creedmoor cartridges until you get to the 22 but if I was buying a featherweight, the stainless preferably, for the ops desires I'd be more interested in getting the rifle I wanted as long as it was chambered in something legal for the region.

I've never even known anybody who used a 7/08 and I've never looked for ammo for one. I do shoot a 6.5cm though and really like it. I've also fund that it is easy to make accurate handholds for it so I'd get the 6.5.

They don't make a featherweight compact with the 20in barrel in a stainless model currently, and it does look like the stainless barrel + wood stock model is discontinued.

That said, the one I got is spot on perfect for what I need & what I was looking for.

A model 70 is never a bad choice. I've had some that shot well and some nicer, supergrades, that shot like hammered dog shit. My current project is a 1953 in .270. The newer production rifles are really beautiful and my supergrade was the smoothest action I've ever felt.

Anyway, I'd challenge you to think about a .243. Other than that, the 6.5cm, .308, or the odd man out 25-06 would be my choice.

Thank you. The .243 is always a great option. I went with the 6.5 instead of the 7mm-08. I've had a handful of different 6.5s in the past and am familiar with it. The 6.5 was also available at the time and the 7mm-08 wasn't. 6.5 creed felt like the easy button for likelihood of accuracy and my familiarity with it and because I have boxes of different 6.5 creed ammo at home and ready to shoot with.

It was the right choice. This one, luckily, shoots like a dream, especially with 120gr NBTs. It is a finely crafted rifle as well. I have no complaints about it so far.

200 yards in the appalachians with a shorter 20” barrel I would favor the 308 Win.

But your choices I would go 7mm08. The larger bore gives up less in shorter barrels as there is a bigger piston for gases to push against.
