Model 70 Extreme Weather SS

I'm really liking the look of the new Extreme Weathers with the gray spider web B&C stocks. What kind of experiences have folks been having with these? I can't bring myself to pop for a really high dollar rifle, but I'd still like to get something with a decent stock and as much accuracy as possible with reloads.

I own 2 one 325WSM and the other a 270WSM, both are shooters and have served me with no complaints. I killed about everything there is to kill in Alaska with the 325WSM.

Stid you never mentioned that the 325 WSM literally saved your life....and it wasn't cause you were using it to defend yourself against a bear!!!

I have one in 300 WSM and love it! Made me think of replacing the others actually. Go get one!

I have one in .300 WSM and it is really fussy with factory ammo (2.5" @ 100 was the norm with a variety of brands). I didn't reload when I first got it so I stuck with factory ammo and I missed a nice bull. I don't blame the gun for the miss but my confidence was shaken so I went back to the .270 for the remainder of that season. I have since started reloading and the gun shoots sub-MOA with my handloads. I know you said you are planning on using handloads but I thought I'd share my experience with the factory ammo for whatever it was worth.

My wife and her EW270WSM

My 325WSM about an hour before we both tumbled down the hill and I stuck it into the ground up to the stock barrel first. Having it in my Kifaru Gunbearer and have it stick in the ground and break away is the only thing that saved me from tumbling into a rock pile.

Black Bear, these salt hunts really test a rifle and this one has done well on many trips.

My son's 300 WSM in a Winchester Model 70 EWSS. His first animal with his new rifle shooting 180 gr. Accubond reloads. She never so much as twitched and just dropped! Shot was about 100 yards. Also included is a picture of the recovered Accubond. Love those Nosler's! This is a great shooting rifle.

I recently picked one up in 300wsm. Topped it with a Minox ZA5 2-10. Its shooting sub MOA with factory Nosler Accubonds. I love the rifle and will be using it for elk this year in Washington and moose next year in Alaska. I was looking hard as the 325 WSM (mainly because of Stid2677's posts here and the alaska forum), but last minute decided to stick with my favorite round, the 300wsm. I like the rifle so much I think I might get one in 325 too.

Thanks for all of the input. If anyone has suggestions about any other similar rifles to look at that have a decent fiberglass stock, that don't cost an arm and a leg, I'd love to hear about them too.

A Kimber Montana is similar pricing and I can only vouch for mine and co-workers, great rifles...

Montana Rifle Company puts together a very nice Model 70 style action (Their own design!) and use top quality synthetic stocks. They run about the same price as a EWSS and are a very very nice rifle. I would suggest you also look very strongly at them. A great outfit and they build a really nice rifle!

Don't know what the difference is in cost between the EW and a Tikka, but by the time you do the upgrades on the Tikka that most of the guys do, why not just buy the EW. It appears that Stid has put his to the test. My personal Model 70 is a Classic SS and has seen a lot of country and has served me well. Really hard to find fault with a 3 position safety and a Model 70 with a claw extractor. I must like them with matching 270 WSM, 300 WSM and 338 Win Mag in the house, all in Model 70 Classic SS. Would rather have the EW, but not available at the time.

My son does shoot a Tikka in 270 WSM and I will say that accuracy and dependability are not issues with that gun.

As always, just my opinion.

Seems like from the checking I've done in my area you can pick up a stainless T3 for somewhere in the $665 range. And the Winchester would be about $1,200. With how good everyone claims the Tikkas shoot, it sure makes it tough to justify dropping the extra coin on the Mod 70. But I do like the idea of having the Bell & Carlson stock right from the factory. Is the general consensus that an Extreme Weather is more or less accurate than a Tikka? Or is it just a matter of getting lucky and getting a good one whichever route you go?

I think that you need to compare apples to apples. Not sure that this would be the place to stop, but at least something to consider when looking at extreme weather rifles: http://www.chuckhawks.com/choosing_inclement_all-around_rifle.htm Not saying that Chuck is the only authority of extreme weather rifles or whether there is a current Tikka product that would meet specs.

Also, as you are aware, the Tikka will have a removable magazine and the Winchester will need to be loaded from the top. I don't have a current model of each so I can't comment on accuracy.
