Model 70 classic stainless 30-06 will not group

That should probably be fine and I’d be at 45-50 with the b/c stock. I’ve had several and most are probably 1.24-1.5 5 shot group rifles with factory ammo. Either way if you really like the rifle I’d have a smith rebarrel and re-bed it. I’ve probably done 30 or so semi-custom rifles and they all have their quirks. Could be as simple as it likes to be clean.

If its stringing I wouldnt bother with a rebore. Just an old fashioned big ass group, rebore might do it.

As stated above, if the crown looks good you try some Tubbs lapping bullets. I've used them in a couple barrels. It didn't turn the rifles into match quality but did help with accuracy and pressuring up issues.

Busted out the scope ring lapping kit which I bought after I had this scope mounted. Looks pretty good. Thanks for the thought

I have a model 70 featherweight in 257 Roberts that shot about 2 moa no matter what ammo I shot through it, hand loads or factory. I bedded it, adjusted trigger, changed scopes and bases and rings etc. as a last effort to get it to shoot accurately I bedded the entire barrel channel. It now shoots 1 moa consistently.

I’ve had this issue on more than one model 70.

Are you crimping the loads ?

Have you played with the distance to the lands ?

That's frustrating when it happens. So much time trying loads. I been there.

Before giving up try some RL 17 with 180 grain Nosler Partitions.

Yes, just checked the mag box. It is bound up. thank you.

I haven’t needed to fix this issue before. My 375 mag box has a little movement but the 30-06 has none. Shave a little material off the mag box with a dremel? Bed the bottom metal?

Never had that issue myself. I'd probly hit the mag box with a file and see wtf happens.

Just as an experiment, maybe remove the middle screw or loosen it up a lot and take a few shots? I remember popular opinion being the middle screw should only be tight enough to keep it from falling out.

Yes this is how I’ve run several m70 customs with success and 45 on front and rear.

It’s a one piece bottom metal - no middle screw…..

I always check this when I take my M70 in and out of the stock after torquing everything down.

Only reason I ever knew to check was trouble shooting the subpar accuracy from my factory barrel and reading others making sure they have movement in the mag box so the action wasn’t riding on it
