Missing my dog

Not sure the point of this post. Drinking beer next to the campfire listening to redfish busting mullet in the flats and everybody went to the tent at 8:30, usually it's me and the dog for the last 12 years tending the fire but now it's just me feeding the fire. I guess I just didn't understand how much I relied on her for a running buddy. Feel free to post pics of your good dogs and companions. I can only imagine. One of my girls is my shadow and I can tell she’s getting close to the end. Really sucks

Sorry about your loss OP

We had to put our old blue heeler down this week. It’s tough to lose a good friend and this one was even tougher with my two boys (3 and 7) going through it with us. We knew it was coming but didn’t make it any easier. He was 14 and lived a good life at least.

OP , I know what you mean about sitting around the fire with your dog after everyone else is gone. I used to do that a lot with my old boxer. She would sit by the fire watching my back. She was the dog of all dogs for me. Won’t be another one like her in this world.

This one would have followed me to the moon. On her very last dove hunt we were going around in the side by side and picking up hunters. My buddy had lost a bird earlier in the afternoon in a big thicket. I pointed to the thicket and sent her in. Ten minutes later several of us were gathered in the same place talking. My dog walked out of the thicket , dove in mouth, walked to the guy’s pile and dropped the bird in it. A short time later we had to put her down.

I’ve had a few over the years but she was tough to lose. She was an absolute predator

The only problem with having dogs is that they don’t live long enough. Losing dogs is brutal, they really are part of the family

We lost my first dog (that my wife got me when we started dating) a couple years ago, he was 15 and had a good run. He was an Aussie. A few years ago one of the guys on the boat had a 14yr old schipperke, and even at that age, she was a complete character, so we go one, then got a boy awhile later, then we had a litter of 2, and ended up keeping them, so we have (I ) 4 schipperkes and an Aussie that we adapted a few years ago that my sis in law used to breed, so there is never a dull moment here, but I know they don’t live forever and that thought is sickening.

I lost mine last year. I’ve never felt grief like that. Still get teary eyed thinking about it. She slept in my youngest daughter’s bed every night with her also, which was really hard on her. Sorry for your loss man

I just had to put down my 11 year old Lab and get to felling her loss, especially when I go for a walk.

This one, Hildy, hurt real bad, not only because she was the best one ever ( all six of them were the best ones ever) This one hunt the most because I knew she would be. my last GSP. I think about them all, and miss them all everyday.

Definitely tough, our Newfie is getting up there in age for the breed and although there’s no signs it’s just in the back of our mind. We were talking about it a couple months ago and the next week the wife added a new member to the family. She said it’s time to stop using a treble hook and fifty casts to retrieve a duck.

This gentle giant was my favorite dog, and he was with us 15 yrs, a third of my life when he went to puppy heaven.

There’s been a few dogs over the years that I’ve had a special connection with. One of them was Coot, my middle son’s dog. He got Coot as a pup when he was 14 and he stayed with me when my son moved away to the big city for work 6 years later. Coot loved my son above everyone, but he learned to make due with me as the years rolled by.

In his later years it was a lot of this…just hanging out with me and sleeping peacefully while I worked.

In his last two days he could no longer stand, so I made him comfortable in the shop. I slept next to him in case he needed anything and he passed away peacefully in the early morning. I had already prepared his final resting place and he’s there about 75 yards from where I sit now.

Heres Cooper- RIP. Super smart, loved everyone and everyone loved him. About 2 years ago he was struggling on hikes....I took him in and he had huge tumor on his heart. Shocking it didn't slow him down sooner. A week later it was filling his body with blood and we had to put him down. Great dog.

We told ourselves we would wait o get another dog- nope...we found a 5 mo old pup-Tucker and this dog barely leaves my side.


Not as smart as Cooper, a bit more stubborn and he gets in trouble more often.......but he is turning into a great dog. Somehow he averages about 15 miles a day on his GPS collar- (Tractive-love that thing) mostly in our backyard chasing squirrels.

I'm sorry for everyone's loss of beloved pets and feel your grief. I lost my 3 1/2 year old cat suddenly on Tuesday. He had been dealing with repeated urinary problems for the last year and had a sudden urethra rupture. In three hours span I went from petting him as he happily sat on my lap purring to holding him close as he took his last breath at the vet's office. He was quite the character, who loved to play fetch like a dog without being taught. I also lost a cat of 17 years a few months ago, plus my kids' dog who has been part of my life for many years will probably have to be put to sleep this next week.
I was talking with a friend and fellow pet owner the other day and he said some profound words: the price of owning a pet is eventually a broken heart. We can take comfort in the fact that we made these animals lives better by giving them a loving home.

Here’s some photos of Flint. He’s been one of the best dogs I’ve ever had. He goes with me just about everywhere, practically lives in my truck. I never have to wonder where he’s at or what he’s doing, just right there with me. It’s going to be a really hard day when I have to let him go. Funny thing is I didn’t even want him when my wife and daughter picked him out. Told them both he was there problem and I wasn’t going to be responsible for him. A few months in and my wife had him pretty house broke and well behaved, taught him a few tricks. Every time I tried to interact with him he’d pee all over the floor, I wrote him off as the girls dog. One day I reached for my keys and he met me at the top of the stairs and acted like he wanted to go. My wife figured it would be good for us if he rode along. She’s still pissed about it. He was mine from that day forward.

Cant imagine doing much without him, hunts, traps, and fishes either us. Goes everywhere we go, he’s 7 so we’ve got time. We won’t get another dog like him, he runs coyotes with hounds, hell kill coons and porcupines, retrieve ducks and geese, and will find wounded deer and sheds all spring. He’s the best house dog and hasn’t worn a leash more than 5 times in his life. He’s the literal best.

But, we pick up the puppy next week!
