Missing hunters in Colorado

Rip gentlemen…

Really a gut check for my second rifle hunt this year. I will be solo for 4 days and then with a super green back country hunter the next 6 days and we will be spoke camping 3-5 miles from the truck. Need to remind myself not to put get in any situations that can go south in a hurry for me or him. I’ll have my inreach going with regular check ins.

I came here to add this piece before discovering that they had been found. Im sure the information will come out but figured I would share.

My hunting partner and I were talking about this situation today and he told me that he read somewhere that their bowcases were not in the vehicle. He read it was confirmed by people who knew them that they took bow cases on the trip with them.

I know the information will come out but I dont remember reading this fact anywhere in this thread or in any of the news articles.

Again. This is not factual, just something that was read somewhere.

Can anyone remember reading this detail anywhere? It would be suspicious for for their bows WITH the cases being gone from the truck, but their packs and other gear still there.

There has been a lot of contradicting information. Most of the updates seem to have come from one close family member of each young man. At one point, I read that the inreach was left at the truck along with any kill kit type items, only their bows were gone. As more updates came out it seemed like they had minimal day gear and possibly spike camp. The report that other hunters talked to them and the missing guys said “going after a bull they saw” turned into a “bull moose” by one media outlet. The go fund me was set up by an Aunt who wasn’t one giving updates, this appears to be the first source claiming they were found deceased. Multiple local LE agencies are saying “two unidentified males”.
Possible that people from the inner circle are saying things that aren’t ready for release and/or skewed by emotions.

Feel for the family that is a very sad e ding but am glad they found them. Will be following further information released for curiousif they can answer why/how etc questions.

Give your family your Garmin account login info. If they don't hear from you they can ping the device from your online account. I used that feature last week to find my device after I stupidly left it on the hood of my truck. Worked like a charm.

If you are incapacitated how are you going to get sat lock. The biggest advantage the InReach or other units have is the ability to someone else to ping your position and send help. Maybe the phone based systems will get there but currently they do not replace my InReach.
I don't think someone else can "ping" your Inreach. I'm pretty sure you must set up your account online to update your coordinates at your desired time intervals, then send an invitation email to each person that you grant permission to see your location via a link. Then you must have the device on and enable tracking. If you don't take these steps it is essentially a PLB that requires you to be conscious to hit the SOS button or send a text with your location and request for assistance.

What is a “Super Green Back Country Hunter” ??
This will be his first back country hunt. And he doesn’t have a lot of hunting experience past shooting a few whitetail when he was younger. He does have some hiking/camping/skiing experience though. And he’s young, healthy, and in good shape. But he’s never rode out a snow storm in an ultralite 3 season tent or rain storm. Or been stuck in a tent for a day or longer due to weather. Or packed substantial weight in the mountains even though he lives at 9000 ft.

Why not set up location tracking intervals, send them the email invite and turn on your tracking on the device? Now they can check in at any time and see where you are at and when you last moved. My wife and kids know that if they check the link, see that I haven't moved for 4 hours they should attempt to reply to one of my messages sent from the device and if I don't reply within a 2 hours they are to call the local sheriff (I text them that number before I leave) and give them my last GPS coordinates.

That’s gettin late in the yr for spike camping that distance. That’s what happened to that from Utah last yr in CO on that very hunt. Only thing that saved him was his SOS. He did a podcast somewhere I listened to but it was insane how things changed real quick

That works too. Just a thought.

I'd like to check out that podcast if anybody knows what it is.

He’s a season hunter from Utah. Knew some weather was coming. Expected about a foot of snow in the high country. Packed in second season CO about I think what this guy referring too maybe 5 miles or so. But killed a deer first day. Instead of a foot of snow got 36 inches or so. And then of instead of waiting it out he decided to pack up next morning and I think the drifts on the mountains coming out ending up being chest deep. He had llamas and they couldn’t get thru it. Got hypothermic and disoriented and hit his SOS and they snowed in and got ass before he died that morning. Really insane. He said he literally was buried in snow when they got to him. Maybe it was the exo podcast? I’ve saw it several places actually. Same thing happened to a guy in NV they had a podcast on on a late season hunt. He was inexperienced though and made some real bad decisions but that inreach saved him too
