Missing hunters in Colorado

I just saw a post on Facebook. They are saying the guys didn’t have their in reach devices on them.

So does anyone know if they left them in the car? None of this makes sense.

How are they purchased?

RECCO site takes you to Amazon and RECCO search comes up with reflective tape?

Are there retail points like REI?
Jump on the Recco web site and go to ‘searchable products’.

Their reflectors are imbedded in lots of clothing and outdoor/backcountry products plus they offer everything from reflector equipped belts to stand alone reflectors that you simply clip on.

I just tried the link…no idea why the reflectors are not available through Amazon. Checking.

There are about 500,000 lightning flashes each year in Colorado resulting in an average of two deaths and a dozen injuries a year. Probably not that. The forest service gets printouts of lightning strikes for firefighting use. Any nearby strikes would be easy enough to check.

Hypothermia has always been the most likely fatal gotcha in the mountains.

In areas with steep ridges or drop offs, it’s always a bad idea to start down something steep you don’t have good intel on. Every year guys get stuck on the rocks trying to go down when they can’t go farther down or back up. From the air it’s hard to spot an old guy stuck on the rocks wearing a bright yellow jacket, let alone a dude in camo.

I can't imagine this turning out well at this point. My first thought was some type of interrupted crime. Can't imagine they wouldn't have been found by now if they ran into lightning or hypothermia. Lots of ways to work a dog through those mountains with the thermal pull in the mornings and evenings.

Lightening is kind of a fluke thing to be affected by, I think wind takes out way more trees based on the deadfall i've seen. There's a reason they're called widowmakers...

What doesn't make sense to me if it was foul play is why would the perp not take their stuff?
If foul play, could’ve been intention to take stuff that was interrupted. If that went south, then the perp(s) would have two bodies to deal with vs a bunch of stuff to steal. Awful to think about, but I’ve ran across some really sketchy people in places I thought I was all alone. It’s not outside the realm of possibility. Hoping that’s not what happened at all. The downside to that scenario is the vehicle and surrounding area would be a crime scene that has been hammered with tons of activity from others trying to help.

If I was a betting man I would say wet cold conditions being lost you will get hypothermia quickly. I know of a guy that was turned around in a very easy spot to get out of, but once hypothermia sets in the brain gets foggy. He passed away on the mountain, young kid in his early 20's.

I thought there was a FB link on this thread yesterday but can't find it. Would like to see if we can share it on Rokslide's FB. Don't know how else to help these guys.

Just read a quick news article on the case. Drones, dogs, search parties, air recon all mobilized for a few days now. If they were anywhere in the vicinity you figure something would have picked them up by now. Something feels really bad about this one.

The story is spreading like wildfire. I saw it in a CA Facebook group that is somewhat estranged from where you think it would be.

Unfortunately, most people panic in that situation and do everything to find their way back while freezing. In most cases if your completely lost and cold the best thing is to create some type of shelter and stay warn before it gets too late which can happen very quickly.

Second thing is who know what kind of cloths or waterproof gear these guys had, I hope I am wrong and all turns out good.

I have a snowmobiling jacket that has the RECCO insert. May have to cut that out and leave it in my pack. Also have three Avy beacons, don't snowmobile any longer but now have a use for them.

About 20 years ago a bunch of us were in Revelstoke snowmobiling. Two of the group went back early and then we had one sled have mechanical issues. We got him out but it was well after dark and the other two had called RCMP. RCMP asked how many beacons were in the group, all 9 of us. They were going to fly over and look for the group of beacons, but we got out prior to that.

A lot of talk here of the gear in the car, possible foul play when returning to the car etc. Where are the bows? That’s the biggest question. If the bows are not in or near the car, then no, they did not come back, no interrupted theft etc etc. I have not seen any mention of the bows from any source. Only ‘gear’ in the car.

I can't remember whether it was Facebook or Reddit, but one of the people posting updates did say at one point that they believed they left the car with their bows to go pursue some elk they had seen earlier.

Sounds to me that they had returned to the car, mid afternoon, and were headed back out for a quick hunt of a bunch of elk that they had seen earlier. Don't know why they wouldn't have taken their packs. Sounds like the Garmin was attached to a pack.

Agreed. Heard a bugle from the truck, grabbed their bows and made a move to be lite and fast. Been there.
